Crrently drive a 64plate 1.6 Tdi Octavia..removed the engine cover today and there's a large silver box at the front of the engine with various pipes going in/out, to the back of the box there's a wide solder line from which there's soot showing and around the sides of the box as well.

 

What is the box and what does it do.

I see, which could explain the noise I get in a morning which sounds like somethings swirling about when started from cold.
