Using a Cisco 887va-m router with Virgin Media

Featured Replies

Decided to move over to Virgin Media from TalkTalk a few weeks ago simply because of the speed difference (no longer using ADSL) and I were provided with one of those "Super hubs" pfftt..

Here is whats wrong with the "Super" Hub

1, Wireless is terrible, keeps dropping off no matter where you are in the house (Virgins solution were to tell me to use Channel 6? Why? I am using auto??!)

2, Random reboots

3, You are forced to use Virgin Media's DNS Servers, there is no option at all to allow you to choose your own DNS servers which can cause massive headaches if you require all users on your network to use a specific DNS server.

So for the last few days I have been trying to get my Cisco 887 router to work by putting the superhub into modem mode and writing the relevant configuration and tonight I have it working!

Because sharing is caring and I cannot find a config for this setup ANYWHERE on the internet I thought this may help a few people who may be looking to do the same thing.

** Note, this config is basic config to just get you going - please ensure you have the relevant ACLs applied otherwise you may just leave yourself vulnerable***

Config based on a network using 10.9.8.0/24
