Experience with OEM mudflaps?

Many good tips here, thanks a lot

Rear mud flaps are not standard part of Elegance-specced cars here in Norway (to my knowledge). With the information you provided I'll just order a full set.

It was easy to fit the ones I have on my Octavia II. I assume it's no more difficult on the O3?

  • Ordered some OEM ones, just thought I'd upload a pic incase anyone wants to see what they look like fitted, as I did! Good advice on here, easy to fit without removing wheels. Sent from my iPhone

  • I didn't have them on my Vrs estate at first as told the OEM ones don't fit Vrs. Got muck up the sides all the time at front, and behind wheels at back. Read on here they did fit. So put them on no p

  • They (Skoda ones) seem to help fend off stone chips from the sides and rear bumper.  Still get spray up the doors though, but not as bad as before they were fitted. They are quite solid so don't bend

I fitted the mud flaps to my VRS, no issues. The supplied instructions were clear, the only modification required was to drill a hole in the front wheel arch liners (you could get away without the hole if you wanted, you just use 2 of the 3 mounting points). But it is plastic so not too hard to drill. I guess a dealer might take exception to that, but mine has been serviced with them on with no mention.

There is another thread here regarding fitting of these, seems a fairly simple job. I have built a kit car so fitting these should not be too much trouble. The Elegance here does come with rears but the tight wads don't fit the fronts ! Perhaps they think only cars behind should be protected?

Anyway I did see some very cheap prices on a couple of Irish websites but when I asked about postage to the UK the total cost was a couple of quid cheaper at the time than getting from the UK. A small saving but I preferred to buy here.

See below:

It does make you think though, if you lived in Ireland you could probably drop by and pick up a pair for Euro peanuts, but exactly the same item here costs much more, at my dealer roughly about 4 times as much. That is not due to just VAT so do our dealers have exorbitant margins or what?

Ive placed an order for other parts from superskoda and received them without any issue. However, ive just ordered a set of flaps from the Irish site. I'll confirm once they arrive (still haven't got the car yet!)

Haven't got mine yet either! Contemplating door scuff plates and will get rearguards protector, rearguards are fairly local (give the car a little run) and will fit for free.

At least I will have some things to play with it does arrive.

Dealer said it's docked in the UK and will be transported to their compound early next week. I am not having it registered until March so have about 5 weeks to wait. I see little point in getting a 64 plate as come sale time a 15 plate should look more 'attractive' to buyers... My theory anyway.

My Avensis is a 61 plate 2011 (Late December) and is actually a 2012 spec model but of course the year is 11 and not 12 so looks like a much older car.  :'(

I've never understood:

1. the need for date related plates (other than to drive sales to "keep up with the Jones's")

2. Why, if they have to be used, do they not relate directly to the year (i.e as you say a 64 plate on a 2015 car)

If I were you I'd just register it and drive it. You could keep it longer and get a 65 plate if you like then it'll be worth even more at trade in time but the payoff is not being able to use it.  It's your money though :)

Seems illogical to me too, I believe they did it because of the amount of work DVLA had just before the 1st Jan and I can see understand it was not the easiest time to do all that. To choose two points spread the workload I suppose.

I noted while in Portugal last year their plates had not only the year but the month shown on the number plate.

Like DEC upper over 2011 lower:

DEC

2011 (Number) PL

I think that's how it went.

No confusion over registered date!! It would not matter at all then as you would list as it is, not as '64' which could be 2014 or 2015.

I am in no hurry, I have road tax left that expires next month, the dealer has agreed to a long PDI test drive with us as passengers to make sure there are no resonance issues, suspension/dashboard/door/trim or any other creaks, rattles or noises that shouldn't be there.

I will also go over it with a fine tooth comb. I just think come sale time someone looking at a photo of a 15 reg low mileage will pay more than a 64 reg with same mileage, so for the sake of a few weeks for me it's a no brainer.

Just to get this thread back on topic...

ordered flaps from the ebay link ajw1100 posted previously. Ordered Friday, delivered Monday, fitted today. Excellent service from a dealer supplying  online. And thanks ajw for the heads up.

Was it an easy fit FlyingGecko? How long did it take you? Wheels left on and presmably just turn to full lock to get a drill in for the third hole?

Took me about 10 mins total to fit the front mud flaps whilst on the drive and you don't need a jack, just go to full lock to get the drill in there.

One tip - drill the hole 1mm smaller than Skoda specify, the rivet holds better then :)

Edited by andyvee

Thanks andyvee

Just seen replies - as andyvee said, including smaller drill. 6mm instead of 7.

Just a little awkward drilling with the wheels on, but full lock each way does the job.

I needed to hammer the plastic studs in - it was bluddy cold yesterday - and used a small length of wood (actually another hammer shaft) to transfer the thump

I ordered a set of flaps from the Irish site and they arrived promptly over the weekend. Approx £35 for the set delivered... Compared to Skoda locally who wanted £40 each plus fitting. Ive not got the car yet (due to land late Feb) but I'll take some pics when i fit them.

Pleased to be of service . I have the flaps........ but nothing to nail them to :D ............

10 min to fix, another 10 to bend down that far :(

  • 2 weeks later...

So I ordered some from superskoda, so much cheaper than the dealers or eBay. Look like genuine in all the correct packaging with the fixings.

Fitting was stupidly easy, I jacked the back up to get better clearance and had to jack up the front and turn the wheels out not in to fit my drill in square to the hole. I have got wheel spacers though so that reduced clearance. Still only a five minutes job

And a closer view of the front ones... Best price I found was superskoda.com... After I'd already bought some on eBay

Well worth getting a set, even if you don't go OEM, paintwork protection etc

Hi JoeFifty,  looked at SuperSkoda and Skoda UK both appear to say mud flaps do not fit MK3 VRS, I presume from your pics they do.  Or are yours VRS specific?

They do fit, just not perfectly. But it's not noticeable except from underneath

Q7Durif, I have fitted both front and rear standard Octavia mudflaps to my VRS, with no problems. They didn't need any modifications and fit well.

Dealers will say they don't fit, but many on here have done without issue.

Hope that helps :)

OEM ones been on my Vrs estate since June 14. Simple to fit, so long as you have some mechanical/diy skills and the right tools....

Sorry for late reply but yes there are the standard OEM ones (5E0075111 & 5E0075101).

You get a extra clips with the rear ones for underneath the car dependant on whether you have single or dual exhausts
