Experience with OEM mudflaps?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've ordered a Octavia Estate Elegance which might show up in March or so. Around here, in wintertime there is a lot of dirt on the roads (wet mixture of lots of salt together a sort of rock flour caused by cars fitted with spiked tires).

To keep that away from the cars bodywork as much as possible I intend to fit mudflaps. I have some cheap china ones on my current Octavia 2 and they help somewhat.

What experience do you have with the OEM flaps for the Octavia 3? Do they work or are there others which are more efficient?

Thanks in advance!

  • Ordered some OEM ones, just thought I'd upload a pic incase anyone wants to see what they look like fitted, as I did! Good advice on here, easy to fit without removing wheels. Sent from my iPhone

  • They (Skoda ones) seem to help fend off stone chips from the sides and rear bumper.  Still get spray up the doors though, but not as bad as before they were fitted. They are quite solid so don't bend

There will no doubt be other options that will fend off more dirt, but they likely won't look as good when the car is clean...

i have OEM mudflaps front and rear and they are good and fit well but I cannot comment as to if they are more or less effective than any other.

My dealer threw front and rear flaps in as part of the deal, the fronts seem to keep the worst crud off the side of the car but the sides of the rear bumpers still get quite a bit of stick so not so sure the rear flaps are as effective but guess it would be even worse without them fitted.

I fitted standard mud flaps to my VRS, they don't seem to do a great deal, I still get mud/water/salt thrown up the sides, onto the rear bumper etc. So if that's the reason for them, I wouldn't say they are great. If I remember I'll get a picture of my dirty car to show you!

I fitted them in the hope they would reduce mud splatter but also because I think they look good :)

Got muck up the sides all the time at front, and behind wheels at back. Read on here they did fit. So put them on no problem. They do stop a lot of the spatter on the body work all round. Think the Vrs issue is that its slightly lower than standard car. But won't affect yours.

Hi again,

thank you all very much for sharing experience and thoughts. I'll get a set of the OEM mudflaps then.

Looking forward very much for the new car! :notme:

I had them fitted front and rear to both my mk3 vrs estates to try and reduce the amount of crud that gets blown up on the back window was finding without them even a short drive in wet roads and the back would be covered and also to help with mud splatter etc as inlaws have a farm which you have to use a track to get to and they help. Still got salt/dirt along the sides but you always will as other cars will spray it as they go past you

Rear flaps are standard on the Elegance - I've also got the dealer-fit flaps on the front and they are unobtrusive and do a decent job. I'd rather have these than some of unknown origin and uncertain fit.

I've had dealer fit front mudflaps on my Octy II and Octy III - its an Elegance so rear mudflaps are standard.

I've found the OEM mudflaps good for keeping stone chips at a minimum and they are OK'ish (but not briliant) at keeping spray off the bodywork.  But I've noticed my Octy III (estate) appears to generate a lot more wind turbulence at the rear than the old Octy II. Consequently the rear tailgate tends to get a lot dirtier than the old car as crud seems to get sucked onto the rear quarters by the turbulence. (I've just retruned home after a long trip today).

But I don't think any other mudflaps would be better so stick with the OEM - at least they fit properly and do provide a measure of protection from stone chips.

I'm tempted to get some for my waggon, how much are a full set?

I used to have big white rally ones on my gti and although they looked ridiculous they worked great (only used them in winter) they did stick out an inch past the wheel arches though so I'm going for something a little more subtle now

Skoda quote £42 for a set (front or rear) here:

Hortons Skoda have them listed for £32 for a set (front or rear):

Failing that, get in touch with your dealer?

I got mine chucked in for free when I ordered the car :)

I believe superskoda do the genuine items and are significantly cheaper than the dealers

"Set of Rubbermats we can do for £ 48

Front Mudflaps £ 39 Fitted £63"

Go to a dealer? I wouldn't if I were you!

I guess someone, somewhere, may be a bit cheaper. These arrived in a couple of days. Had seen variable reports on SS and they never did reply to two emails I sent on products so that sort of put me off ordering from them. If they cannot bother to respond they don't deserve the business. Imho that is.

My OEM front mudflaps were £40 fitted by the dealer.

And I will fit my own for under £30. I haggled hard so I guess my discounts are all used up!!

£63 is the fitted price in the Nov 14 price list. I could pay that or DIY; some will pay, some will not. Its a matter of choice and ability.

If the OP wants to buy some he now has a choice of suppliers, my links were only a suggestion for him to look at, buy if he wants or not buy.

"£30 for just the fronts - I'd go to a dealer if I were you"  What is that implying? I am paying too much and also implies the dealer is cheaper. I am paying much less than Minimoke and in this instance the local Skoda dealer is not the best place to purchase.

Perhaps he could also get them dealer fitted for £40 if so great but he could also with the aid of a screwdriver fit his own for £30. Saving a further £10.00.

I added dealer fit fronts to my factory order (would have been nice to have them factory fitted, it's not like they aren't official skoda ones!) simply because if they screw it up, they have to fix it. I didn't know how easy or hard they'd be to fit and would rather not risk it. Had I been buying a few years old 2nd hand motor, I'd have probably had a go myself.

Try Skodapartsireland.ie.

Front + rear mudflaps EUR 27.60 + postage.

I bought the ones for my Octy 3, Rapid Spaceback and Fabia 2 from them late last year and they were without doubt the cheapest I could find, with quick delivery and really good customer service to boot (ask for Graham if you call - really helpful bloke).

I modified the front and rear flaps on my vRS to allow them to flex when going over speed bumps (as it's lowered 40mm on H&R's) and they work well and protect against stone chips and side spray. Still get some stuff up the side of the car but no mudflap is gonna stop that 100%, especially with the state of the roads, huge puddles everywhere and mud running off nearby fields. Rally cars have got doormat sized flaps screwed to the wheel arches and they still end up covered in ****. Half the crap you get down the side and rear is down to overspray and the stuff being thrown out by other cars anyway (especially the ones without mudflaps).
