i always thought OEM antenna was a short stubby connector not that which looks to be an aftermarket iso

That's not an OE part. Have a look on eBay for similar pieces.

I've found them on ebay, but I don't know if those are universal or for a specific manufacturer/model and this is why I am looking for a part number.

They are universal. As long as the connectors on the ends are the right ones for your needs then it'll be OK.

The think cable is for power to the antenna base. In case you didn't know.

The VAG antenna use 'Phantom power' which is transferred via the core of the cable. Most third party head units don't do this, hence the need to add a separate power input to the cable adapter.

Which pin of the ISO connector is the blue cable meant to go to? I have one of these but haven't installed it, strangely my Goodmans stereo seems to work OK without it, though maybe reception could be better.

That site's for VW stereos, if I understand correctly, and the problem is mine isn't a VW stereo, so doesn't do phantom power, but it looks like pin 5 is the one I want if this site's right: pinoutsguide.com/CarAudio/car_audio_iso_pinout.shtml

That should go on a positive 12V source IMHO. Am I wrong ?

Power it off the electric aerial connection on your Goodman's HU.

That being pin 5 of the ISO connector, I guess.

The HU instructions should tell you.

I'm sure they would if I had them.

Yes, but one that's only powered when the stereo is on, or at least only when the ignition is on.

Pretty sure it always goes to the blue and white wire on the din connector

It will be the wire on the car harness that is the diagnostic K line. You need to disconnect this anyway otherwise it feeds 12V to the OBDII socket and can kill code readers.

I think I get the gist of that but not the detail.

Is the OBDII socket the diagnostic interface behind the ashtray? And are you saying that if I don't disconnect that line from the ISO connector, a third party head unit can feed a voltage to the diagnostic interface and damage stuff that gets plugged in to it?

Yes, but the socket is behind the little cubby down and right of the steering wheel.

Cool, I know the place you mean. Thanks for that, think I know what I'm doing now.

Thought I'd link to the brilliant Ross-Tech explanation for anyone who finds this thread and knows as little as I did about this stuff:

I shall try to go digging tomorrow to see what's connected to what at the back of my radio.

Offtopic question: Do you think it will be a good idea to place a nice small 150w subwoofer in the spare wheel compartment and replace the full sized wheel with a small one so they both could fit in there?  :dull:

No, I think you should install a headphone socket on your dashboard instead.

Well, I've done that already ... it's for line-in, of course, with something that looks like this, by replacing one of the dummy buttons. How about the idea of placing a small subwoofer in the spare wheel space?

How bad would it be ?
