Gear Change Indicator

Featured Replies

Should not maxidot displays show the current gear?

Thanks,

if i was designing it, then yes it would

what it actually does is show you what gear it thinks you should be in.  completely pointless IMO.

Mine doesn't show anything, contrary to the manual's information, which is why I asked.

The manual for my March 2012 vRS MkII FL states the following:

An information for the engaged gear (fig. 17) is shown in the display of the instrument

cluster.

In order to minimise the fuel consumption, a recommendation for shifting into

another gear is indicated in the display.

If the control unit recognises that it is appropriate to change the gear, an arrow is

shown in the display. The arrow points up or down, depending on whether it is recommended

to shift into a higher or lower gear.

I can't confirm whether this is true or not as my car has DSG and the display does show the gear in use and whether Auto, Sport or Manual is being used.

Yeah that's what I'm reading says, but mine is older at '59.

No Maxidot :notme:

my 2011 fl has this feature and its a manual box , whether it has maxidot or not I don't know.

There are manual cars that have this feature

no vrs has it

My 2011 manual 1.8 tsi 4x4 with maxidot has it.

My manual tsi 2010 vRS has it!  :D

I have a little stick in front of the handbrake. It got 1-6 and R on it. Simples..

My 2010 1.4 tsi has it and its a waste of time really...tries to make you change up to 6 when going up a hill and getting slower!.....I assume it basis its indication on speed rather than engine load.

My manual TSI 2011 vRS also has it. From what I remember it was added in 2010 and I don't believe it's something that can simply be switched on.

As a rule I don't use it. I'm always attempting to get into 6th as quickly as possible, so the indication doesn't even display a shift as I'm already there.

Once or twice I've been on one of those boring runs to or from work and I've just forgotten to shift and I've glanced, seen an "up arrow" and thought d'oh, then shifted up.

It is best ignored.

The fivers worth of fuel it will save you will be well off set by the cost of a new DMF after driving around in too high a gear all the time.
