Does the FWD Yeti 1.2 TSI have something similar to a differential lock?

Featured Replies

Does the FWD Yeti 1.2 TSI have something similar to a differential lock? I've read, that 4x4 Yeti does have Haldex clutch, that gives the effect of a differential lock.

I tried to google it but I couldn't get a answer from anywhere, that "yes it has" or "no it doesn't".

I'm asking because I used to drive a FWD VW Caddy that had trouble with ascending up a little ascent to my home yard in winter (ice on the road) and during spring/autumn (really wet ground, very muddy). So I think a differential lock would be very helpful, because when one wheel spins and doesn't have traction then the other one that does have traction would start pulling the car forward.

Sometimes during the winter roads are not cleaned regularly enough, so having a car that's a little bit higher from the road is also practical.

I'm looking towards purchasing a new car that is a little higher than VW Caddy (doesn't get stuck in the snow so easily) and that would also have somekind of differential lock capability. Yeti seemed like a good choice.

I'm not planning buying a new 4x4 because it is out of my price range. There's an used Yeti 1.8 TSI on sale (100 000 km, 12 000 €) but I'm not sure it is wise to buy an used car if I can get new FWD Yeti for 15 500 €.

Sorry if my english is a little bit broken. Greetings from Estonia.

TL; DR Looking for a FWD car that isn't just SUV looks but also a little practical.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the 1.2 has any form of diff lock.

However, with winter tyres on, it will perform as well, if not better than a 4 wheel drive yeti with normal tyres, so I shouldn't worry.

There are a few threads on here about the subject.

Thanks for answering. Winter tires on or not neither Caddy nor Opel Combo were capable of moving through my driveway during harsh conditions. One wheel starts spinning and other one is not moving. Even when the other wheel should have reasonable traction. I guess the FWD Yeti would be the same.

Hi Tuljo,

As previously stated my friends all 4x4 freaks were scepitical of my Yeti Purchase.

That was until we went to to beach to test out my new toy.

At a passage & Cutting between 2beaches.

My Mates & I still remember Nissan Patrol 4wd with High lift suspension & Large Tyres.

Guess whose toy had to help who.

I would suggest 4x4, current Qld/Aus weather is wet extreme and have no problems with traction, never used Low range.

Yes, it has a form of electronic differential lock. When one wheel starts to spin the brake will operate on that wheel to send torque thru to the other wheel.
Even my nearly 10 year old Fabia has that.

EDS: the Electronic differential lock
continually compares the rpm of the
drive wheels, and if it identifies a
difference between them which
could lead to an individual wheel
spinning, for example if the two
wheels are on different types of
surface or accelerating on wet
leaves, the system brakes the wheel
affected until uniform rpm of all
drive wheels is restored.

Hi,

The 4x4 yeti has an 'off road' button as a option..or standard at high trim levels.

This will change the behaviour of the traction control and 4x4 system, and other driving aids (if fitted as an option or fitted as part of a specific trim level).

Although not a diff lock they mean the yeti will behave in a vastly different way on slippy or rough ground, there are several threads on here that discuss it.

I would check if the one you are looking at has the button along with its wider spec.

Cheers

The 1.2 isn't available with 4wd and so if you think can't be found with the off road button- petrol only and fwd is the mix for the 1.2.

Maybe the EDS on a 1.2 FWD is enough for me. I'll try and figure out whether my 2008 Caddy did have EDS or not and then try and get a grip on if EDS will be enough for me.

New Yeti with 4wd is too expensive for me, even if the "off road" mode is only 70€ something extra for the lowest specification level.

Thanks to all the answers. It is true I didn't research this topic very thoroughly.

I don't get the Yeti till next week but the EDS on my Fabia works great.
If one wheel is on ice, grass or mud etc it stops it spinning out of control and puts torque thru to the other.
There is no manual diff lock that will do much better than that.

Ah, sorry. I totally mis-read the post.

The OP had mentioned his observations with the 4x4 version

Sorry. Must be more careful with reading the posts.

I'll get my coat.
