Very squeaky alternator

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I saw this post a few days ago and I couldn't remember if I saw it in here or the Fb page but I haven't been able to find it on either anyways. So here goes,

I've had the car sat in my garage for a month whilst I was driving my 106 around for a bit, it's come out the garage running fine and dandy but the alternator belt has started squeaking very loudly. Is there a temporary fix for it or does it need replacing, if so what do I need to buy? Thanks

Sure its the belt and not something on the belt?

Alternator, aircon or the tensioner?

it's coming from the alternator (pulley) I think, should have been a bit more specific there !

If its the alternator pulley.easy enough to replace if you have an impact wrench.

Or a breaker bar and a scaffold tube.

Ive done the pully on my alternator mate for the same reason. Id personnally shell out a slight bit more and get a total new one. You need a tool to remove the pully

It was a pita.

plus you need to be sure its on right or it might shear off.

Mine is fine now but tbh would of been easier with a new one.

As the above has already said. Id inspect the condition and replay the whole thing. And check the aux belt

I replaced my belt at weekend glad i did.perished and shiny.only matter of time before it snapped

When the pulley dies it often takes the tensioner with it.

Def do the tensioner too. Get a decent one too not just the cheap version from ecp.

Just had my belt and tensioner replaced. It cured a horrible squeaky noise.

BTW if you have a hard pipe kit it's a right PITA, slightly easier if you remove the fuel filter and vacuum box!

I'll pop into skoda at the weekend and see what the price is for a belt and tensioner, not replacing the whole alternator as it needs the cambelt doing soon as well, money money money ! :(

Mine also needs the cambelt doing mate, going to tackle it myself :)

IF you do it yourself, VCDS scan it first to get the timing you have now, measuring block 4 iirc? then after get it back to that.  I didn't do it first so am trying to get it back to perfect with good mpg which I am struggling to get.

Try TPS for parts of CP4l but watch the cheap makes though

if you're a cheapskate (like me)  the tensioner pulley bearing can be lubed    use a needle to lift the dirt seal------bit of a fiddle but spot of oil and dab of grease will sort it most times
