G201 starting to rear it's ugly head?

Featured Replies

Since the weekend I've had the ESP,ABS and one other warning light come up on the dash 3 times (funnily though it's only happened when pootling along in town at low revs). Now I've noticed that though and kept the revs a bit higher it hasn't happened since.....yet.

All I need to do though to clear them is turn the car off, when I get it going again only the ABS light stays on and then that too disappears after a few yards. Is this a warning that the dreaded G201 fault is about to occur or is it a case of if it's the G201 failure the lights come on and wont go off again till repaired? If it's the latter then I guess I should be looking at something else occuring to cause these 3 lights to come on but then be able to clear them with just the simple 'car off/on' technique.

Its happened to me twice, both times it was abs ring on rear wheel bearing, replaced both within 2 months,

Sounds more like the the ABS sensor ring as said above.

Easy symptom is that you can clear the lights and the stay off until you go past 30mph.

Unfortunately means a new hub since the ring magnet is integrated into it.

If it's a rear consider doing the stone guard at the same time. They're aluminium and rot at the bolts and can come loose. Simple to change if the hub is coming off anyway.

Cheers for that guys. I guess an 'error' code will be logged but a bit too hopeful in assuming it will identify which corner (separate code for each) is the offender? It's driving around slow is when they come on. The other warning light that comes on that I couldn't think of  last night is the TPMS light.

Error codes will show which wheel.

Got lazy/apprehensive as I knew what a ball ache the caliper carrier bolts are to do to be able to get the (VRS sized) disc off the hub so took it to my mate who does my MOT's. He hooked it up to his Snap ON scanner and it came up with sensor fault so tried that first (least expensive) and I let him do that. New sensor only ended up throwing the fault up quicker though so in the end I today 'grew a pair' :D  and went to ECP and got a new rear hub (FAG) and changed it out today and that's sorted it all out. Bearing had a fair bit of play and now thinking that although the other side (nearside) hasn't started playing up yet, after 122,000 I would expect the bearing would be in a worse shape than the offside (one I changed) was, what with potholes/drains and all that. Might see what MOT comes up with as far as 'play' goes next month and just preemptively change that side as well. Turns out the OE hub that came off was a FAG unit too so don't worry about it being a quality brand if anyone is also looking at ECP for a new hub/bearing. They did a cheaper one but I went with the more expensive one as that one showed a new bolt with it too in the picture. You have to change the bolt with the torque involved.
