How long before economy improves

Featured Replies

Mine does that too, and alot of the reduction of mpg on the trip computer happens when you are stationary.....watch how the ave mpg drops if you leave it ticking over.. Makes you want to switch off......

Strangely my Superbs range indicator (the one that says how many miles till you run out of fuel) goes up when your stationary!

Sat outside petrol station waiting for it to re-open - 0 miles left on range, after a couple of minutes - 5 miles then 10 then eventually 15 just before they opened!?

Was sitting with car idling so was using fuel, how can it say i can go thurther with less fuel??

Better than the Ford CMax I hired on holiday though. The range gradually lowered to about 100km then a warning beep sounded and the range wasn't displayed. I suppose that's so they don't get sued if some halfwit runs out of fuel. Truly irritating.I'd never ever buy one just for that reason. If they let it go to 0 but you had another 40 miles in the tank that would be ok.........yes it did bug me :D

Ive done 40K and I get 40 - 43mpg around central london, short trips I think thats bloody good seeing as I used to get about 28mpg from my 1.3 ford escort popular... About 50+ when I hit the open roads... dont drive slow, but dont hammer it either...

I'm running-in my new vRS in at present. Have done 280miles so far in towns and open country lanes. No motorways. Keep revs 2-3K. No foot-to-floor acceleration. No labouring at low revs. Average MPG=45.

i get around 55mpg running at 1500rpm in 6th. It took till i`d done 5000 miles to average over 50mpg. Before that it refused to do more than 40-45mpg. Then as soon as i`d done 5k it started averaging 50-57mpg! Spooky.

mine has done 10k, and last week I drove from Manchester to Brum (+70miles), and as an experiement I tried to get the most MPG out of it I could.

doing 55 MPH @ ~1800rpm, tailgating a lorry, I managed 72.4 MPG when I entered brum... after getting lost for 45 mins, in traffic when I got the hotel it read 68 MPG... still, I'm not complaining :-)

Then again just back from scotland (to manchester), decided to boost it mostly 90-110 appart from roadworks (KPH ofcourse) I averaged 43 MPG which I was very happy with to.

Mines just done 5k, put about 900 on in the last week & I'm getting 56. Thats 99% motorway miles so pretty happy. On the same run my type r did 25, mini cooper 37 & S2000 21.

Keep it between 1400 and 2k for economy - don't use 1400 if uphill though, change down.

Don't use cruise - he's a bit lairy with the go pedal :thubdwn:

I find the 'current mpg' meter to be very un-nerving, if i'm in say 3rd and accelerating (reasonably briskly) it will happily drop to 20mpg.

Got to work with 38mpg showing on average, which is through a bit of country roads and a longish dual carriageway (8miles from home). The dual carriageway though has a hell of a lot of roundabouts so it's constantly dropping to 3rd or stationary and setting off again.

I can't see me getting over 50mpg on the motorway tonight as i drive to taunton.

If it doesn't do you reckon i should ring the garage? or should i just leave it and trust that it will improve with age?

(the main reason i'm a bit erked is cos it's my first new car and i bought a diesel especially for the economy so i'm a bit miffed it ain't any better than my 1.8 petrol)

Use the methods shown here, or if anyone's local to you, get them to go with you and maybe give you tips on how to drive for economy. Also, under 1000 miles it'll be really tight, I wouldn't worry.

I have been trying to keep it under 2k and above 1500 but as soon as I accelerate even gently it drops pretty sharpish (the current mpg).

I guess this trip will be my test, i'm gonna try and keep it in 6th and hover around 70-75mph.

By the time i've got to the M42 the traffic is usually ok and normally you can keep 70-80mph going without having to slow down.

There are an unfair number of variables at play usually :(

We went to the Forest of Dean, and I was doing a LOT of 50mph junk, a few hilly bits, a few fast stretches, and a bunch of backroads where I enjoyed giving it a bit of welly (not necesarily fast as such). Returned 50.2 mpg on that trip. Current mods are the PD160 intake and the Green Filter (which needs to be cleaned desperately, maybe this weekend :P ).

On a day-to-day trip to work, 100 miles round trip, I get anything between 32 mpg when I make very significant progress ;) and about 45 mpg. Fuel economy was about 10 mpg worse when I got the car. It's now done 20k near enough. After the first service fuel economy seems to have stabilised, or the difference is not enough to worry about :)

Roundabouts & fast acceleration really dont help MPG in any car, cruising is where it really gets good. Depending on speeds etc try different gears - I always have the current MPG on, and you get to know how the engine responds to the conditions (temperature, moisture in the air, hill, that kinda stuff) - sometimes it works out that higher revs in 4th or 5th are better than lower ones in 6th, other times it's different.

It's something to keep entertained with I suppose, if you get bored

Most of the time though, I find that around 38 MPG is pretty easily achieved, even when making reasonable progress. If you have a similar 'start' to mine it shouldnt dip much below 30 MPG on an average trip where the car has time to warm up properly and stretch it's legs.

The other thing is that fuel economy doesnt seem to be too great around the point where the turbo spins up/down, it seems to be kinda hovering, at which point I tend to change gears

well just got back from Taunton and I think it's done ok economy wise.

I drove pretty carefully keeping my speed between 60 and 75ish (occasionally dropping to 56 on hills lol) . The average MPG read 55 when i got to taunton, but it read 63mpg when I got home tonight (I think it's losened up a little in the 460mile round trip). All in all I've done 486miles so far and it still thinks there is 65miles left in the tank. Given it only cost me

Hi,

I Picked my new black 55 plate furby VRS up at the weekend from Edinbrugh and it was showing 49-47 mpg all the way back to Newcastle.

I love this car!!!!

After my previous monster gas guzzling loonatic of a car, my vrs is a revelation if it loosens up to do more I will be gob smacked!!

  • 1 month later...

Im glad to read all these comments.. Had my vRS a week and only getting 40mpg.. :thumbdwn:

I cant wait to over 50mpg!!! :)

Well again, I have to go against the briskoda grain, and say that my MPG really didnt improve dramatically after it was run in. The difference was perhaps a couple of MPG.

So just like that magical extra 20 bhp that everyone gets at the 10k service that I didnt get, this is yet another one that never materialised for me

FWIW; my job involves all city driving, and I only got 36 MPG in the vRS, yet I get nearly 30 in the Clio 182.... there really isnt that much difference.

The engine loosened up a little, MPG was a little better, but nope I would agree, 20 bhp would be a crazy difference :P

For city driving a N/A petrol will return decent MPG for sure, and I would not recommend buying the Furby vRS if you're going to do short-distance city driving as it will absolutely s@ck on fuel economy until it warms up.

Most cars return relatively poor fuel economy in short-distance city driving, be they petrol or diesel...

Rob.

Also depends what you call 'run in' too. My Superb 130pd(same engine as Fabia VRs) only really started to feel loosened up after 70k!! I used its full potential from after the first 1000miles too so it wasn't down to my driving, all this talk of 'run in' and 'loosened up' after only 10k is rubbish, takes forever to truly run the bu**ers in!! but you wont know how it feels till it is truley run in, or you drive one that is.

IMO some diesels are actually worse than petrols for gobbling up the juice when sitting in traffic jams. Obviously the diesel makes up for it though when your'e actually moving again.

Giving it beans you can get down to high twenties if you try

I got 18 just after my remap! Seems to have gone back up now to just above what it was before, which is nice.

The range of mpg I get is huge. On the 3 mile run to work I get about 35mpg, sometiems 40mpg if the traffic lights work in my favour (there are a huge number and my daily commute is basically traversing the town I live in). It's worth pointing out that my town is on the edge of the Peak District and hills do not go in favour of mpg. If I go west on the A537 into the hills I get about 40mpg there and back. If I go east onto the Cheshire plain on the A537, I can get close to 70mpg average there and back. Just shows the difference!

my vrs has always averaged around 50 mpg, it got more responsive when fully run in tho.
