How long before economy improves

Featured Replies

So far i've only covered 180miles in my vRS and the mpg really seems to suck at the minute. I've heard that i shouldn't expect the engine to return it's stated mpg until it's properly run in, is that true? If so how many miles roughly will it take?

If not any ideas why the economy is a bit poor?

Cheers.

How bad is the MPG currently? When I got mine I drove from Simpson's in Lancashire to London and got 53mpg. Check the tyre pressures, as mine were a little low and correctly inflating added 3-5mpg and some much needed steering feel... ;)

Mine started getting better after 5000miles.

Depends how you drive. Thrash it and it will loosen up in about 2000 miles, driven gently it may take 15-20,000 miles. 20% improvement or more might be seen by then.

driving home and to work i seem to be averaging around 35ish mpg, some of that is on a dual carriageway.

How low should it go say in 3rd if you floor it?

I'm down to the girlfriends this weekend and it's all motorway so i shall have to see what the average comes back as on that journey.

Is there anything that could be causing poor fuel consumption (or good fuel consumption depending on your perspective)?

A heavy right foot?

Very low tyre pressures would. - Lots of stop/start traffic.

A good 75mph run should show close to 50mpg.

Around town in heavy traffic my can drop down to the high 20's low 30's.

Try and think more ahead when your driving, avoid slowing down quickly and pulling away quickly. If this is your first diesel it will take time to adjust your driving to make the most of it.

I found mine used to give about 35mpg when AS new as yours.... 15,000 miles now, and averaging 50mpg... so run in now and improved...... give it a few thousand miles and you'll see good improvements.... :)

I saw my first 60 at about 6000 miles.

Giving it beans you can get down to high twenties if you try

:rofl::rofl:

I got an average of 65mpg on a run... that wasnt hangin about either, cruising around 90-100 (kmh officer) with the occasional mess with beemers..

oh yeah, ive done 52k miles :D

if I watch the current mpg figure it can swing anywhere from 15mpg to 170mpg depending on what gear and how many beans i'm giving it.

I'm guessing the one i really want to be watching is the average mpg?

Average is better, (although in an Octy) I frequently see 5, enough to give up the will to drive...

Key is not to labour the engine, so low or high in a gear is not great, town driving will drag it down, but 35 does fee la bit low.

Not a offending question I hope, is this the first TD you've had?

I know for me it takes a while to change from driving style, eg petrol to diesel...

You get the average down to 5mpg on the road! Lowest average over a run I've had on the road is around 12mpg when I was having a crazy day.

Yes it is. I have been trying not to labour the engine as it's brand new.

Basically should I be worried? or should i just forget about it and see what it's like a in a few more thousand miles?

In the Ibiza (PD130) when driving for economy I try to keep the revs around the 2krpm mark. What revs are you driving at?

varies, I haven't gone past 3500 yet but I do sometimes rev upto 3000rpm. I'd say on average i'm keeping it at 1500rpm sometime less, sometimes a bit more.

Prehaps a little low then, I find economy better above 1.5krpm.

How does ecomomy compare to your previous car on the same journeys?

no idea really yet as I haven't had the chance to test it (previous car never had a trip computer).

I will have a better idea after this weekend when i've driven 230 miles to the girlfriends.

you're making me think somethings wrong now lol :P

I suspect you're just not used to driving a diesel yet. To find the best revs for economy I drove for a while with the instantaneous MPG display on so I could see what gear suited what speed. e.g. keep a constant speed but try going up/down the gearbox and watch how the MPG is affected once it settles.

Driving styles are markedly different. I really do struggle with the boss' Saab 9-3 when I get in for a company job, now I'm driving the TDI again. Find the gearbox stiff, clutch heavy, its a turbo too, but one which is only very decent from 3500rpm+, not from 1500rpm+ :D

For economical driving I've found mine is good in 6th around45/50mph - feels very comfortable at that speed. Done 8000 miles now. Also, I'm hoping my remap will help the economy as I'm running a BFO turbo and BFO (well, not so BFO) intercooler. Not sure the standard map is liking it so much.

I saw 27mpg AVERAGE on a cross country lane run on Sunday. :o I was carrying seven people though. (private roads - I'd never carry more than five usually, especially not with one in the boot :D)

Depending on how it's driven, it can take a very long time to get right up to temperature (cold car stuck in morning traffic might take 20 minutes or so). Fuel economy when cold is awful, and drags the average down if you only do short journeys.

I wouldn't worry about it unless your long trip mpg is below 48. It gets heaps better with age.

Mines done 13k now and seems run in nicely - much smoother and more economical than when new.

In the first 1000 miles I remember being disappinted with my economy (although can't remember exactly what it was). Now I average 48mpg with 50% steady driving, 25% brisk driving and 25% hammering it. Dead chuffed

Mine does that too, and alot of the reduction of mpg on the trip computer happens when you are stationary.....watch how the ave mpg drops if you leave it ticking over.. Makes you want to switch off......

It is indeed the case, and I do tend to switch off

Change up and keep above 1500, usually I get best results around 18-2000.

Dont forget if you change up too low your off the power and will cost your mpg (which works for any car not just diesel)

There's the poll thread on MPG at the moment, and you can see how economy improves with the mileage :)
