Small benefit of expensive regular diesel

Featured Replies

My local BP on my way home must be unable to charge more than 99.9 for anything on their forecourt. So whilst low sulphur diesel is 97.9 as advertised, their BP ultimate diesel is only 99.9. Its usually at least 6p or 7p more than the regular stuff, but now its only tuppence.

Was so surprised by this last night I treated my car to a tankfull, and if the regular stuff stays as high as it is, and Ultimate really does improve performance/economy to more of a degree than that extra tuppence, I'll keep using it.

So, I'll be on (its first tank) Ultimate on Saturday. With it being its first tank I expect gains to be minimal. Should be interesting though. ;)

Shell diesel extra is back down to 96.9p / litre up here.

My local BP mucked up the price of their Ultimate a few months ago, it was 5p cheaper than the normal diesel!!! Needless to say I filled up the tank plus a few jerry cars & the Rover

They shut the pump soon after that  :o

Hardly dropped here at all since the crisis was apparently over. They dropped initially by 4p, then more recently nipped back up a couple. :(

Just glad I'm back in a car with a better average than 20mpg.:D

I recently filled up with a tank of Optimax under the same circumstances!

I am unconvinced of its benefits though. I guess there must be some cleaning of some description to the engine internals/injectors. Only used the one tank mind. :o

Hi

I run BP Ultimate or Esso Supreme (petrols) in the V6 Omega and the results are quite noticable. I dont think there is much in it performance wise, however the car runs smoother with either in the tank. Fuel economy seems similar or slightly better also. Optimax and my engine just dont get on (may be the chip), but I find the car loses low and mid range power (really noticable) and uses more fuel on the Shell stuff.

One of the primary benefits of these premium fuels is their ability to clean the backs of your inlet valves, so in a diesel I am having difficulty in seeing the point. Certainly have not been able to determine an advantage in either the Corsa 1.7Di or Fiesta 1.4tdci. I will of course try em in the Fabia (arrives next week :D:D:D ) and will post if I find anything advantageous

Chris

Also tried the BP Ultimate vs the standard derv they do - it smokes a little less. But the Esso standard stuff seems to be about as good on that front, and it is about the same cost as the BP standard derv. I do put some Ultimate through every once in a while, but not seen any advantages beyond what I've just mentioned. Fuel economy was unchanged, Fab vRS, standard except for PD160 intake + green filter (at the moment) ;)

Remapped perhaps it has more impact, if temperatures are kept under check better, but no clue here to be rather honest :D

Well, drove past said garage again this morning and their regular derv was up to 98.9 :grumpy: Might go and see if their ultimate is still only 1P more.

I am new to diesel are there benefits?? Is there optimax and ultimate diesel??

Think unleaded is 92.7 near me, the creep back up only seems to be done by texaco, they are always a few days late taking the price down, eg most were

Then as time goes on, creep it up a bit at a time, nobody will notice.

Has me pondering an oil burner, sadly it only does 35mpg at best so rock hard place I am caught between, maybe petrol will be the winner after all :D
