I've succumbed to GPS

Featured Replies

:o

I've always been of the "A map will do me!" philosophy, but succumbed to an ad for a Navman on here a week ago. Damn, its nice. I was a little disturbed most of England wasn't on it at all  but after installing the software on the laptop it became clear it was just the memory was being used to store bits of France more than the UK. Was dead easy to delete and install the rest of the UK on it.

I like the screen, like the display and interactivity. Guess I would have preferred a pen and touch screen, but the menus are dead easy to use and I've pretty much mastered it without referring to the instructions.

Oh, and using GPS, I've finally been able to check my speedo against GPS speed - Its only 2mph out - reading 58mph when speedo reads 60. Good to know. Wonder if I can download silly voices for it? I noticed the voice file is a simple 1mb file - I like the idea of Homer saying "take 3rd exit, DOH!" and "mmmm, you've arrived"

Thanks Chris.

Hi,

Been using TT5 for a while now on my PDA. Pretty good, though I have to admit I don't need it to acutally navigate that much, but it is good for working out timings for journeys etc.

I am, however, just back from a holiday in Pisa, Italy. It really made navigating about totally stress free (even enjoyed the driving after I worked out that most Italian drivers will pull out on you...).

I also use it on my Mountain bike with Memory Map OS maps which is handy when the mist comes down on some windy Scottish mountain!!

Regards

Have alook on pocketgpsworld , lots of downloads and the FREE SPEED CAM database can be uploaded into your poi , if its needed just in case .

I`ve been thinking about getting a GPS system which i can use in the car aswell on my motorbike. I`m looking at the Tom Tom rider and Garmin Quest. Has anyone know anything about GPS to help me choose.

Glad your happy with it

I would have liked the voice of steven hawking, might direct you through a worm hole to avoid traffic :D

IIRC, the voice packs I've seen all over the place only work with TomTom units.

Which is a bit of a downer, as I'd really have loved either captain picard giving me directions or Kelly Hu telling me where to go

What I would really like is a nice add-on to upload "safety camera" info on to it. Its damn nice being able to swap over various maps from the CDs, but I'd love to think there could be camera info I could add on using the navman software, and obviously funny voices would be good too.

I think its using the Smartmap V2 software, or something like that. But removal of the maps of France, and adding in the rest of the UK was easy. Any idea how much say a 512mb chip would be for it? The 128 one is OK for the UK on its own, but not much good for getting extra maps of Europe. :)

It took me to my first "unknown" on Saturday, that being TSR - But I realised it was taking me the wrong way as it wanted to go left, when I knew TSR was to the right.

Has anyone got the Ozzy voice for tom tom?

Does he tell you to ****ing turn left at the next ****ing junction?

Funniest thing I heard Navman woman say was (when shooting past turn it wanted me to make) "Make a LEGAL U-turn" - with a degree of emphasis on the "legal" Does a 180 handbrake turn count?

Aside from that I can't grumble at all.

Yes and almost - he tells you to f-f-f-f-f-f ****ng turn left. I have Clint Eastwood on at the moment who tells me that you've reached your destination punk. Do a search because somebody has posted a lot of voices on this website, including Ossie and Clint - that where I got them from.

I don't know about dedicated Navman but I have TT5 on an Ipaq 6340 PDA & phone and that automatically downloads the latest camera positions from the internet everytime I dock it with the PC.

Right - I need a new voice for mine!

Where do you go to download them (and how much does it cost)?

If you have to download, there's usually a way around

I am sure I downloaded mine from this site - somebody had posted a load of different ones. I have just tried searching without any luck so maybe I am cracking up. Unless whoever posted them can reply?

I have a selection of voices for tomtom.

Arnie, Eastwood, Homer, Picard, Yoda, Darth, Ozzy (bleeped and un-bleeped versions), Joanna Lumley and some other bint, Sean Connery (

That would be sweeeeeeet!
