Roof bar help

Featured Replies

I've recently bought my first Skoda, a Superb Estate, 2011 & so far I'm loving it.

I want some roof bars for it, but I'm getting conflicting information regarding what size I need, as I've seen some listed at 120cm for it, yet others saying they won't fit & 135cm will fit.

Has anyone fitted a set & know what size they are?

Thanks in advance.

GW

As you have the estate, do you want the roof bars to go between the car roof rails, or to go on top of the roof rails and overhang?

I have the whispbar bars which clamp between the rails. They are about 95cm long between the car rails.

I have a similar query but for a 58 plate saloon/hatchback... Would prefer roof bars across ie nearside to offside. Any recommendations guys?

so I recently went about this exact thing. I have a 2012 estate with the added joy of a panoramic roof.

i wanted to be able to open the roof while the bars were on, so in the end went with thule aero bars 961 + foot pack 757. the bars were 118 cm iirc.

they stand up a bit from the car, but work well, and allow the roof to be opened when they are on (which is most of the time) as a bike carrier lives up there. the wingbar/aero bar that fits much closer to the roof wasnt an option for me as it wouldnt let me open the roof, so no info on it I'm afraid.

there is a thead on here already about bars & sunroofs so that may help too.

Got mine new off ebay for £40. I think they are made by Maypole. They adjust to the width of the roof. They may look cheap but they do the job and ive had no issues using them to carry the roof box or any other loads. Just cant justify spending nearly 4 times that for a known brand for the abuse they get with me.

A useful link here to info on the whisper bars.

The aero version 'between' the bars are what I was going to get but having read the above about the panoramic roof (which my car has) I may need to re-think that.

The whispbar through bars or the flush bars should be ok as the roof bars are lifted up above the roof rails. It's the aero-x bars that go straight across with the low profile.

Also remember that because of their shape, most accessories will need to be mounted using the T-bolts, as the bars are too wide to fit conventional clamps around them.

Thanks 100andthrty just the job... Set of Cruz bars it is

hey so here is a pic of mine (as per above with the aero bars and 757 foot pack). pan roof opens just fine.

they look fine on the car, and give enough clearance to open the roof when they are on, and if you have t-track accessories its still ok as they are mounted on top of the bars - i usually leave a bike rack up there.

Thanks for all the help,

I bit the bullet & bought some Thule bars, expensive but they'll be carrying my bikes, so I wanted the best I could find.

Bought 127cm set in the end, but looking at it, the 120's would have been fine.

Nice & solid & came as a package with the mounts in a box to save ordering separate items.

Good luck with them.

Bars for saloons are usually more bespoke than those that fit to estate car roof rails.

Try looking at this page:http://www.roofbox.co.uk/scripts/rbvehsel2a.php?query=7585&emulate=whycar

It's the feet that are different not the bars. The combi uses feet that clamp around the roof rails and the Twindoor uses feet that clamp over the edge of the roof under the doors. I'm using the same Thule square bars we had on the Volvo V70 last year with the Twindoor this year. I just need to purchase a new set of feet and fixing kit and sell the existing feet and fixing set that fitted the roof rails on the V70.

The only difference between the Superb combi and the Twindoor regarding the actual bars is that the combi uses slightly different length bars compared to the Twindoor. (I think the combi uses slightly shorter bars compared to the Twindoor)
