2001 factory fitted thatcham 2 alarm

Featured Replies

Hi. All about 2-3 months back my alarm started to play up . It locked the car fine and set the alarm but when I came to do it again it didn't have a light that flashed . I gave it a little shake as you do and it came back on then thought I shouldn't of done that and tried to unlock it again and it wouldn't work . I did mange to get back in the car after Afew hours but never used it again . I've brought a new battery for it and tried it again it flashes but won't set the alarm or nothing . Would it need reprogramming again if so how would you do it ? Keep pressing the button until it sets itself ?

It was fatory fitted I think as that's what comes up on the insurance . It has no markings on the fob to tell you what make it is just says thatcham 2 on the insurance

The MK1 vRS never had a factory fitted alarm as standard fit or option, if it has an alarm its aftermarket.

Common aftermarket alarms of the time were made by Sigma and Toad, I had a Sigma one fitted to my old MK1 vRS which had a separate fob.

Yea this is a separate fob also with 2 buttons . One to set it and a panic one . Is there any way to disable it once it's set just invade it doesn't open again .

My mk1 vrs has an alarm you set using the standard fob. Always thought it was factory/dealer fitted.

Looking on the Thatcham ratings list the Octavia is listed as Cat 2 from 98 onwards and Cat 1 from July 04 onwards.

Cat 2 is immobaliser only.

Cat 1 is alarm and immobaliser.

A lot of insurance company used to specify that a Cat 1 alarm need to be fitted by a Thatcham approved fitter before they would cover certain cars.

A lot of people mistake the flashing light in the drivers door for an alarm, its not and is just an indication that the deadlocks are engaged. Sigma also had an alarm which could be operated using the factory remote, so if it really has an alarm it could be that.

My old MK1 Octy vRS was one of the first in the country and on the roads in the UK, it was a July 2001 registered Y reg, purchased brand new by me at the time.

The one I had fitted was a Sigma M30, this had just a single button remote. The one that worked with the factory key was either the M10 or M20 (cant remember, we are talking 14 years ago).

A two button remote sounds like it could be a Toad alarm, again common at the time. Usually if you lock the car with the key remote instead of the alarm remote, the alarm remains disabled.

Mine has got alarm because its gone off a few times. But its an 04 so as ruffday mentions maybe one of first fitted with both or its a M10/M20.

A scan with vcds will tell you if it is an OEM alarm.

Mines got a laserline alarm and immob(neither works) but the fob for the alarm is two button. One for the alarm and one as a panic button thing.

The toad sounds just like mine . The alarm fob locked the doors , set the alarm and took the windows up . If I locked it with the key remote it just locks the door . No alarm was set as I used to do that when I had the dog in the boot and left the window down a little . I'm was registered about June time also in 2001 .

My laserline does all the above too

Does anyone know the definitive answer on this? According to the handbook of the 2003 car I viewed today, it has an alarm which should be triggered by opening a door, tailgate or bonnet, activating the ignition, or interior movement, but I couldn't set anything off by sticking my head and torso inside through an open window, or opening the bonnet, with the central locking locked and the red led in driver's door flashing.

Are you sure it has an alarm fitted?

I think on that year it was an option.

That's my question, lol. The handbook says it has an alarm, but is that section just there for those owners who selected it as an optional extra?

For a car built in 2003 to not have a factory fitted alarm seems a glaring omission, and to not tick the box if it was only an optional extra seems a bizarre choice by the car's original buyer.

My old 2003 octavia didn't have an alarm. But our 2003 Seat Leon does...

I doubt the handbook says it has an alarm but will have instructions for one.

Most manufacturers use the same handbook for more than 1 model, for example some models will have just air con but the book will also have instructions for climate.

As for factory alarms well not many had factory alarms back in 2003 and a lot of the option ones were expensive and not as good as some top end aftermarket ones.

Best thing would be to call at a good auto electricians and have a chat with them.

That's what I meant - seems that the handbook had the alarm instructions for those buyers that had been sensible enough to spec it as an option, but that it wasn't a standard feature, I just wondered if anyone knew 100% definitely whether that was the case.

We're talking 2003 though, not 1983 - most cars ( certainly range topping ones) had factory fit alarm/immobilisers by then.

The handbook will cover all possible options, even if never available in the UK. All cars built from about 1996 onwards have to have an immobiliser fitted by law but there is no such requirements for an alarm.

The sticker in the boot spare wheel well should contain the factory build options that the car was specced with and with that you should be able to tell. There is also a copy of the sticker stuck inside the front page of the owners manual.

My 2003 Elegance model did not have an alarm. For completeness I have attached the page from the sales brochure for my car which shows which models had the alarm.

Answer is that all had an immobiliser (shown on a page not attached) but only the basic Classic version had the option of an alarm. All models above the Classic had no alarm and did not have the alarm as an option either!

[open circle is option available, filled circle is standard, and a dash ( - ) means option not available].

Surprising.
