Time for me to move on :-(

Featured Replies

Yesterday I parted with my 2001 110TDI with the best part of 241,000 miles on the clock.  She went as part ex for a few quid against my replacement car.  I am sure I could easily have got more privately, but it had a few issues, and I had decided I didn't have the time to put them right (or the desire to get cold in the garage trying), and figured a dealer had more time and resources at fixing rather than me feeling guilty and selling privately.

Needless to say that I owned the car since about 2004, and it proved to be pretty reliable.  2 failed batteries, the hydraulic hose for the slave cylinder failed, as did the master cylinder (possibly caused by the dealer who changed the clutch when I bought it at 60,000 miles - ex lease car), and 2 track rod ends (the only thing which caused an MOT failure).  I changed the shocks all round once at about 100,000, although I think they were due again.  Rear beam bushes were changed, to deal with a tyre wear issue which I could never cure (thinking bent beam - it had signs of an rear end/side accident).  2 years ago I changed the front wishbone bushes.  Oh, and a replacement NSF door window after a toerag smashed it to steal my radar detector.

Turbo was the biggest issue for the last few years I had been fighting with stick vanes, even Mr Muscle treatments only last for about a month before needing to be repeated.

She was still on her original exhaust however.  All in all, pretty cheap motoring.  Removed my BlackVue, Parrot kit and dog guard before selling her, think I might miss not having the false/raised floor in the replacement. Looked nice and standard when she went though :-)

I've replaced her with a 61plated 1.6TDI mk2 Octy estate in black.  Feels a bit slower when initially pulling away but more of a kick after.  MPG certainly seems better.  Thanks for all the help over the years guys, keep up the good work.  Time for me to learn all about the mk2 (I would have loved a mk3, but I do too many miles to buy one and see it drop in price so quickly).

Cheers guys it had been fun & a great education :-)

I'm sure I'll pop in and say:

"CTS, n75, vacuum pipes, sticky vanes" from time to time

"oh, another broken aux belt tensioner, best replace the alternator pulley then...."

"Clean out the rear of the front wheel arch liners if you have water in the rear footwells"

:D   :D  :p

sorry to see the silver lady depart. I now can look forward to hearing about DPF regens and stone chips. The new black MK2 Octavia is very nice in the flesh, makes me want to clean mine now!

Looking forward to hearing about the modifications.

She served me well, shame I didn't get to 250 or 333, but it was close!

I've got a FL mk2, in SE trim, so thinking front logs & DRL (maybe), and I just realised it doesn't have a windscreen wash fluid level sensor, and maybe a reversing camera as I have a feeling the headunit supports a video feed (as I haven't fitted a tow bar yet, so missing my more traditional parking sensor!)

DFP regen should be fine with the miles I do :-)

Great value for money out of her then, done her time and a good point to move on at. Enjoy the Mk2, you can take my old place in the part of the form since I upgraded and moved in here :D A lot easier to hard wire in the camera neatly in the Mk2, I used the drivers side storage compartment (I did an install thread in the Octy II section for it if needed).

Any chance of a picture or 4 of the new motor?

I'll see if I can take some pictures today (at work).  She was certainly a good workhorse, but it is nice to no longer hear clatters and bangs from the suspension :-)  I'll take a look for your install thread a bit later.
