Possible Ripoff

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and this is my first Topic

I just came from the mechanic with this invoice and I think it is to much for what was done

I have a 2003 Fabia 1.2

Can anybody advise if the prices are within the normal range in the U.K. or have I been ripped off?

Labour:

Supply & fit front brake pads and discs £40 + VAT = £48

Clean free off and adjust rear brakes £20 + VAT = £24

Parts:

Set of front brake pads £24.70 + VAT = £29.64

Set of front brke discs £22 x 2 = £44 + VAT = £52.80

Total = £128.70 + VAT = £154.44

I think that £155 for supplying and changing one set of front break pads and two sets of brake disks is just to much (oh yes, they also adjusted the near brakes and cleaned free off)

Or is that price normal nowadays?

Also, anybody knows how much time will this take?

Cheers,

you could of got front pads and discs fitted them yourself?

would of been 1/4 the price you paid.

Welcome to the forum.

Looking at the figures above I would hazard a guess that the labour rate for the garage is £40 per hour plus VAT (1 hour for front discs and pads & half hour for the rears) which, to me, doesn't seem excessive.

I suppose some might argue that a 'skilled' mechanic wouldn't take an hour to do the front discs and pads.

Likewise the parts don't seem over priced either in my opinion.

Did you get a quote beforehand?

Thanks for your feedback.

I didn't get a quote beforehand.

It was supposed to be something simple and straightforward...

I was also thinking that a proper mechanic wouldn't take so long to do that. I think 1.5 hours is a lot of time.

Looks like good value to me, unless the 2x new front discs and 4x new front pads are really poor quality. Only time will tell on that front.

Looks about right to me. Obviously a bit hard to argue without agreeing a price but I wouldn't say you have been done as long as your happy with the work. I would always rather pay a bit more for the better quality of work. Awesome gti and darkside advertise garage prices on there website for a comparison. Not sure if the brakes are on there.

Cheaper than the place I used to work.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Of that £154.44, he only gets £60.

The rest is parts & a chunk to HMRC.

Of that £60 about half will cover his overheads, so net net he will probably clear £30.

He may make a small %age on the parts but its small beer overall.

Cheers for the feedback

Now I don't feel so bad about those £155 that I wasn't expecting to spend when I woke up this morning...

Best to try doing it yourself for comparison if you think that's really expensive lol.

Not the hardest job but its their time which is money, and parts aren't free.

Just checked ECP would charge you almost £22 each disk = £44, £20 odd for the pads = £46.

Plus they also worked off your rear brakes.

So about £100 for labour, assuming they did a fair job with fair parts sounds fair to me ?

Seems reasonable. I spend that much on front pads alone on my cars, without any fitting costs :D

He's not exactly ripping you off at those prices, I'd be surprised if he's making much of a living to be perfectly honest.

Wow lucky you don't come to out work £60+ vat an hour. Sounds like you got a right bargin there. You got to think they have overheads and have to pay for tools ect. Do the job your self but you gunna spend a bit on tools to do it.

Different car I know, but when I had my Vauxhall Carlton estate, I had very much the same job done and I nearly had to remortgage to pay for it !

Checked with my local mechanic who does my Fabia and he reckons that you've got a good deal.

My local VW dealership charge £98 + VAT/ hour. :D

That price (as said by others) seems very reasonable.... just as an aside... you have a 12 year old car, be prepared to spend more cash than that.

:D

70+ an hour where I work...Kia Main Dealer. Even employees half price labor rates still worse than that.

Agree with all of the above

Fair pricing.  I've paid up to £70+VAT an hour in the SE and £50+VAT an hour in the NE

Looks quite cheap to me.

£40 per hour for labour these days is good.

Cheaper than what I do, one and a half hours would also include a road test so it's probably more like Fronts 45 mins and Rears 30 Mins. That is too cheap if anything.
