140 or 170

Featured Replies

Hi, I've got the 140, it was a showroom model to took it as a package.

It gets to 80mph (in France) quick enough for me.

If you put your foot down enough it will go and leave others in your mirror.

It picks up from 60mph on the motorway enough to get passed others in reasonable comfort.

After 19500 miles I am getting 40mpg average.

Bear in mind the Yeti is shaped like a brick and over 60 the mpg tends to drop fast.

If you have the cash, get the 170 if that's what you want/like. It's only money.

Good luck in your choice.

I went from an 8 year old Audi A4 Avant 140 TDI to a 170 Yeti with no hike in insurance, so I can't see insurance being the deciding factor.

Also, the 170 is better on tax and economy also - at least on paper.

If you get the 140 then decide you want more power or brakes, the cost of remapping and brake changes would be more than the £700 difference, you'd have the pain of insuring a modified car and come time to sell, your modified car will most likely be worth less than a stock 140.

If you buy the 170 and decide it has more power or braking than you need then just don't press the pedals so hard. The car will also retain its resale value as a 170.

When I went from 110 2wd to 170 4wd, the insurance difference was £4 a year.

Hmm very true.

The brakes are the one thing I'd change about my 140.

Without doubt, my 170 is the best car I have ever owned.  I too am picky, but I can't really fault it.

Although I don't 'drive on my brakes' the 170 brake pedal has a lovely 'feel' and loads of stopping power if you ever need it.

Big service and belt change coming up in two weeks - have extended the belt change to 5 years, but with only 28,000 on the clock, I thought it was worth taking the chance.

Best regards to all.

Or remap the 140.

Some people don't want to run a modified car.  Or potentially invalidate the engine waranty.

Or they might want the bigger brakes the 170 has.

But if you want fun the 170 has a different turbo and so maps to 210.

Which means the 170 making 170 is less stressed than the 140 tuned to 170, if you are going to keep it for a long time.

Not many people buy a lower power car and map it to get the desired power output when there is already a more suitable car on the market.

I think all things being equal you would get a 170.

However if that isn't an option the 140 isn't the dreadful underpowered lemon that it's being hinted at here.

Exactly.  The torque figures aren't that far apart.

If the DSG had been available on the 170 when bought mine, my car would have had a little more red on the back. That said I have never found the 140 lacking in performance despite having a 170 Tiguan previously.

Thank you to everyone for your comments regarding my dilemma about engine choice - They have been most useful in helping me to make up my mind about whether or not to change the engine spec for my new Yeti. It is apparent that the majority of comments were in favour of the 170 and it was useful to know also about the bigger brakes.

With all of this in mind and indeed responding to my own gut reaction, I have been in contact with the local dealership who following my instruction were able to change my factory order to the 170 engine.

At least in the future I will have peace of mind and won't be thinking I should have gone for the more powerful engine - It just remains now for me to wait until the new vehicle arrives which hopefully will be sometime in April.

Best wishes to you all,

Yetifinn

I agree, if there is the car with higher output available its a better choice, but I'd still have remapped the 170.

I went with the previous model 140 DSG and remapped it as there wasn't a DSG 170 available. Now it has the 312mm brakes it feels fully sorted.
