Starting from cold, weird thing I found

Featured Replies

Please excuse me if everyone knew this already but, one particularly cold morning I turned the key to start my Skoda straight away and let go. A few seconds later when the glow plug coil extinguished, the car started. I wasn't touching the key at the time so it appears turning the key sends a signal to start when the glow plugs have done their work rather than the old system where you waited for the glow plug light to go out before turning the key.Again, if everyone already knew this or thinks so what then I understand, just a surprise to me and perhaps I should get out more.

My Cr170 doesn't do that, but then it has Kessy. I would have hoped I press the Start button and it would start after the glow plug light goes out. However I have to hold the Start button for the whole time. It doesn't try to start until the glow plug light is out, though, so some intelligence.

Mine does not do that!

Are you saying you turned on the ignition, then after the glow plugs had finished heating the car started all by itself?

I don't think this is normal.

The latest MkIII Octavia when fitted with stop/start will automatically start the engine if you stall it as soon as you dip the clutch.

FWIW our FL CR170 L&K does this. It's only noticeable on really cold days when the glow plugs need longer to do their business. I've assumed that it's linked to our car having stop-start so there's more control over when the engine is running (or not).

I've not seen it, but it's rarely cold enough in Ireland for the glow plugs to need to do more than a token preheat. The odd time I've turned the key straight to start the engine has started without glow plugs at all, so they're probably not strictly needed. I almost always let the glow plug light go out before starting though, so if it does happen I could have missed it. I don't have stop-start though.

Yeah, I've noticed this a little on the FL too (with S/S) but as psycholist says its rarely that cold in Ireland for it to be very noticeable.  Its only a few seconds anyway if it does happen and no hassle if I need to wait.  Glow plug heating was much more of an issue on older diesel cars where you could be waiting for 20 or 30 seconds - it was a very conscious step you had to take.

My Superb has S/S and push button start. It takes 3-5 sec from pressing the button until engine starts when it is between minus 5 and 10.

Facelift Kessy does exactly as you hope :) I only press the start button once shortly and it starts by itself after the glow plug light goes out . Meanwhile you can buckle up or do some other useful stuff.

Nice find Niveketak

Tried on my L&K DSG and sure enough quick flick if ignition key, foot on brake and as soon as the glow plugs are out engine starts on its own. Mine has S&S also

  • 4 weeks later...

Just reading this thread with interest. I have a March 2015 2.0 tdi cr with stop start and when starting it first thing in the morning on a few occasions over the last couple of weeks since i collected it, i have turned the key and nothing happens, and it is only as i let go of key, the car starts up. I presumed it must be linked to stop start and above comments seem to confirm this. I tried turning ignition on, wait for glow plug to go out and then it starts normally. To be fair, with my last 2012 model, i would always just start it but when cold it would take several seconds to fire up (presumably once the plugs had warmed up).

My 2011 1.6 TDI does the same thing. Flip the key once, and the engine starts once the preheating is done. Clutch must be pressed at all times.

My 2014 SE does it , hop in foot on clutch , turn key in ignition , lights and everything come on but it doesn't attempt to start until glow plugs go off

Yup!
