Experiences with 90s/early 2000s Jap peformance cars

His wasn't even particularly fast in a straight line. It seemed to have a big-ish number of bhps at the expense of torque.

...and powerband. My point was that you'd get it into the powerband, then it would change up and fall out again.

I like Supras as well , got a friend who bought a scooby before Xmas , it's just had a new gearbox and engine rebuild , it can be a lottery on these cars

They are simple to work on but wouldn't recommend then unless you can do a lot of work yourself

Is there alot of manuals online for working on them?

One of my mates has had FTO, FTO GRX?, & modified P1..........................

basically they all handle....................& go like stink......................the P1 you need ear defenders for a long motorway journey......but on the back roads how big are your balls???........................ :D

but have the bodywork & interior quality of a cardboard box by todays standards......................& finding one that doesn't require a total proper strip back & re-spray is hard as a lot have been "patched"................

However if you do find one then hang to it & make it a keeper.......................

When buying these cars did he get a full inspection done on them by the AA/RAC or anything to make sure it hadn't been "patched"? Or did he just inspect it himself?

My mate has a Twin Turbo Supra that he has had for 4 years now. He uses it pretty much on a daily basis.

He has never really had any major issues with the car other than problems which we have caused ourselves by playing about with it.

He did however manage to wrap it up on Castle Combe racetrack so we ended up re-shelling the car and built it back up the way he wanted it. Currently running around the 400bhp mark, much like the comments above regarding the Skyline, he gets around mid 20mpg, infact he used to use the Supra daily instead of his scooby as it was better on fuel, and the car doesn't really come into its own until it hits 100mph+, doesn't mean it's a slouch however, once the second turbo spools up it certainly flys.

Bet it must be heartbreaking to crash a car like that :(. Good to hear he got it fixed though! Surprised to hear he ran one as a daily. I don't actually see any around outside of trax generally so I'd guess most are purely weekend/"special day" cars. I'm surprised to hear some of these cars aren't great at low speeds, I always assumed they'd be pretty fun to take on a B road.

One of my mates had an FTO MIVEC; Like a VTEC but not a Honda, oh and it had a 4-speed slushbox so it really wasn't quick in real World driving.

An auto is one thing I wouldn't be getting. With these sort of cars I can't see the point unless it's manual, because they're supposed to be fun.

His wasn't "patched", & he knows his cars & does the mechanical himself (he is an aero engineer!).....................I've seen a few that have been.....in fact his old P1 when he sold had original factory paintwork & although he had some of the rust spots etc. properly done it could have done with a full strip & re-spray as the winters up here are not kind to cars! His old car (P1) he has seen for sale with a horrible orange wrap...hiding the original blue paintwork which needs sorting now.so a major problem now for any new buyer...........

I was away with the Mrs at the time when he text me, I really didn't believe him till he sent me the pic of it. Suppose thats what happens when you get brave and start chasing after a GTR with 4wd and more computers than the Space Shuttle, oh and also they have traction control and ABS haha.

They are great on B road blasts don't get me wrong, they are bloody quick but where as 100mph+ in a normal car the acceleration would seem to tail off the Supra certainly doesn't. It keeps on pulling.

I never used to see any Supra's on the road, but once my mate bought his I've seen several in the local area
