Remapped Octy Vs. Standard Scoobie (drag race predictions)

Featured Replies

As you may know I work on an airfield and hence, have the luxury of being able to thrash up and down 2 miles of tarmac when ever I feel like it.

Recently a guy joined the company who drove a Ford Racing Puma. Now, he was sure he'd be able to beat me in a drag race so challenged me to a little race..... he lost, totally thrashed by my Jabba'd Octavia 1.8T

Now, he is a little miffed with the result to the extent that he has chopped in the Puma for a Scoobie (OK so a child may have influenced the change too)

The Scoobie is a standard UK 5 door WRX without the PPP, 2000 miles on the clock.

My car is a Jabba's Octavia Elegance knocking on the door of 220bhp.

I'm slightly dubious about the re-match, while my colleague has said he's happy to carry a passenger to film the event.

What are my chances? Obviously the Scoobie will get the power down better thanks to its 4x4 but once rolling is he really going to whip my ***?

I reckon it'll probably be pretty even. The WRX will get the power down earlier and will probably be ahead up to about 80mph where it will suffer from higher transmission losses (and probably poorer aerodynamics?) higher up the rev range. You may be able to catch him but I don't think there's going to be a great deal of difference.

Will you be cheating again, and stripping out all the unneccessary weight from your car?

Chris

Just found this info..... (can post link if you like?)

The power output (225bhp) remains as before but a popular modification when specifying the WRX is the 265bhp performance pack which not only matches the power of the standard STi but produces even more torque. Maximum pulling power leaps to 257 lb/ft at 3,500 rpm compared to the STis 243 lb/ft at 4,000 rpm and the regular WRXs figure of 221 lb/ft at 4,000 rpm. The result is a 0-60 mph time of 4.8 seconds with the Prodrive-developed WRX performance pack and a 0-100 mph recording of 14.

1 seconds. This compares to the standard WRX times of 5.6 and 15.9 seconds respectively

Sneak a few concrete blocks into his boot while he's not looking. ;) About 50 of them should be sufficient to even things up in your favour. :D

I say he'll get a better start - 60 in about 6 seconds don't they do? After that I expect you to gain a bit - What sort of distance? Over 2 miles I think the Octy might prevail.

So, when's the Briskoda day happening then? :P Can a db limit be enforced? Maybe landing a few jets inbetween will mask the noise. (how much noise can a few Skoda make anyway? ;))

Sadly the local residents have complained about the noise. So they're not taking any new bookings for car events, Ferrari 355's now have to run with 2ft extensions on the exhausts to silence them :(

i rekkon you'll do him!

Is it a blob eye or bug eye?

Its a blob eye

A standard Scooby WRX will do 0-60 in 5.9s & 0-100 in around 16.5s IIRC from Autocar test.

If your Octy has 220bhp, I would say it would be close call from a rolling start

he'll murder you on take of but you may be able to keep up on he move. you need a 4x4 mate :D

can I borrow your's, Bengie ;) ?

yip definately get a 4wd ;) none of that haldex stuff tho, proper Quattro ;)

on a serious note im sure you will fair pretty well when moving, getting a decent start will make or break you as the scoobie will take off without fuss evertime

Let some air out of his tyres when he's not watching (alternate corners of the car)

Nah, Haldex is better for drag racing as it disengages when not required and therefore reduces transmission losses.

its ok i was just having a laugh mate

I know you were, but I was bored so replied. :)

Can you film the race? High quality video of course, and enable playback on windows media player?? :D Good luck man!

Yep, the scoobie driver has voulenteered to carry a digital video camera - and someone to operate it :o

im the same mate :thumbdwn: mondays should be banned

Well, I've now sorted out a camera mounting for my car, sadly I wont be able to move it whilst driving so I've opted to angle it at about 45 degrees to the side/front. This way the scoobie will be in the frame for at least 5 seconds ;)

Cant wait!

It should be a doddle. My stock Fabia was just about as quick as a stock bug eye WRX [when rolling] - i am now in STI territory - so a 220hp Octavia should eat it for breakfast.

Good luck.

Andy - is that based on fact or just "feel" ?

Yeah dude...130bhp vs 276bhp? Come on man get real...it may have felt as fast since a stock Fabia vRS and an STi have pretty much the same torque figures...

 If you read my post, i clearly stated that my stock car was just about there or there abouts as quick as a WRX bug eye [225hp]. Now i have a RICA remap i am in STI teretory [265 hp]

So wind your neck in !

P.S Goochie that is based on personal experience.
