MOT and tyres

Featured Replies

Whats the jackanory here?

Car was in for MOT, failed on a windscreen chip which was annoying but unfortunately correct (5cm from top of the screen totally away from drivers view but in the sweep of the wipers).

I had advisories for rear tyres with wear being 2.3 and 2.1mm. Garage immediately tried to sell me tyres obviously.

Got home and had a look, tyres looked fine, plenty tread. Got my depth guage out and tyres were measuring about 3.6 - 4mm. Only on the very outer edge was the tread thin. But I think that's actually the shoulder of thr tyre and the tread is merging in with the sidewall at that point.

Found this on a jag forum which describes the situation but in may case I'd say that the reading was taken at the extreme right edge of the right hand circle.

I'd be interested to know the answer to this as I've had advisories for this also.

This is why I always take my car to an MOT place that only does MOT's..............nothing else is done there.......................so no fobbing you of to get more money!

Let me put tyre wear advisories into context - I once had one for "only" having range 5.8 to 6.1mm tread remaining.

Switched to using the council depot a few years ago, will never go back to using a garage. Do get some silly advisories (every car I take to her has a corroding exhaust) but get an honest 'don't worry about it, it won't fall off' rather than a 'you need a new system, that will be £X hundred'.

Found this place last week, came in three days very good price, for all makes of tyre, this is just the ones for wife`s  4x4

This was the Honda frachise that puts cars to a local MOT place, they don't do them themselves.

The MOT station does have a reputation for being harsh

They annoying thing about the screen was that I bought it with the chip and they wouldn't change it because it was only an advisory in the then valid MOT. Must have grown they said.

If it's right at end of wiper sweep, fit a slightly shorter windscreen wiper

Too late I guess.

It was annoying me a bit anyway.

It's in the sunvisor band as well so hardly what you'd look through.

Advisories mean nothing , they can put what they like in there

Where he took the reading from isn't the central 3/4, I'd be classing that as part of the outer circumference. To state an advisory on that is a bit unnecessary, but then you don't have to necessarily take much notice as you've strong sense of responsibility for your car anyway. Guess they were hoping you'd panic a bit and fork out for something you don't need...yet.

The sad thing is it probably works, I had a similar situation recently when I put my car back to the dealer for a service and MOT (simply because it was still under warranty and I thought it would be more straightforward with warranty claims) and they phoned me before the MOT to advise me of any potential items that could cause a fail.  I was surprised when they told me the tyre tread was dangerously low which I was surprised at as I'd checked them recently, I asked them what depth they'd measured and they replied between 2.5mm and 3mm.  Rather bemused I pointed out that there's no way that's going to fail an MOT to which the lady replied that they had to warn the owner first which was obviously out of the goodness of their hearts and not because they were angling to sell some new tyres I'n sure.

And the answer is....... ?!?!?

Hmmmmm...I think tyres is their favourite/easiest scare tactic and tyres give them a good margin, or am I being too cynical?

Tyres do have a good margin for a couple of minutes work

I thought tread just had to be > 1.7mm across middle 3/4 of the tread too.

And the answer is....... ?!?!?

The advisory was misplaced and excessively harsh I'd say. A verbal mention may have sufficed, although the legal depth is across the central 3/4 worn edges are an issue, but again I feel the advisory and their sell of tyres unnecessary at this stage.

Cheers mate

Funny thing is, my local garage tells me they're obliged to test the vehicle as presented and not after they've done whatever needs doing to pass the MOT. So if you run your car in and ask for a service and MOT, then do the MOY first and then address the issues on the service. Apparently DVSA (or VOSA as they were) want this doing so they get a good snapshot of how cars are presented for MOT.

Especially at a dealers where they don't engage with the tyre fitter's price war.

Out of a good Hankook I know it's £40 margin in the size for my car, then there's balancing, fitting and disposal

Makes you want to cry doesn't it?

Not really as I get them at cost price :D

I was more shocked at the lack of an advisory on the rear brakes. They're not exactly bonny and usually a hint of grime is enough to get "slight pitting to disks" on the advisory note and sales push for replacement.
