Logbook changed to Fiance to cover insurance but I pay finance, Garage stating illegal?

Featured Replies

I purchased a car in 2013 for the Mrs as shes a driving instructor, so obviously the car was in my name as the main driver and i paid for the finance.

Since this time (over a year has passed), the insurance (ADI insurance), had no issues until they rang about a month ago when the renewal was due stating the policy if renewed would be illegal as the logbook was in my name however the mrs was the main driver (as its ADI insurance so i cant be the main driver).

The logbook was changed and the insurer was changed due to the monumental fudge up over the insurance now being illegal.

Now i've had a letter from the garage stating the finance needs to be paid in full or the logbook needs to be put back into my name.

Im stuck between a rock and a hard place at the minute as the insurance is specialised so i cannot be the main driver, however the finance has to be paid by me (main wage earner).

Would this be made any better if the finance money came from a joint account?

As we arent married yet the names wont coincide if i claim she lives with me (she does and were engaged).

HELP!

Have to find another insurance company, some are ok with the main driver not being the owner and others arent

Managed to sort it now, i rang the garage and asked them to verify which clause i had legally broken from whatever legislation and they backtracked and said well as long as its at the same address its OK. I asked for formal correspondence of that but all should now be well! Next problem please i'm on a roll...!

I assume that because it's an instructor car she had to be the owner for liability reasons?

Not really, because the insurance would claim against who ever was driving the car at the time, therefore if i owned the car and was on the insurance they could still claim.

But its a different style of insurance where crashes are deemed non fault, and not recorded in the history due to it being a learning vehicle and its expected to incur damage now and again!

I swear though, driving that car is like having a target on you, I've had more near misses in that car than my own! and its nothing to do with the power of the car, its the other F***ers on the road who assume, ah learner car, ill overtake or not let them out or just generally cut them up!

100% agree.

Like you, my girlfriend is also a driving instructor, and when I drive her car for whatever reason, it is like you said, having a target on your back.

And because I'm in her 'office' its her livelihood on the line, so you can only suck it up and ignore it! :swear:

My girlfriend who was a competent learner driver at the time also complained how, whenever she drives the car with L plates on, people take the p*ss. I then proceeded to leave the L plates on the a week with me driving it, had no problems and it shut her up, although it wasn't a marked up car. This is in east London btw, one of the areas filled with the worst drivers I've ever seen

Ok, I know it's sorted, but I guess the garage doesn't know the difference between the owner and the "registered keeper" of a vehicle?

It appeared not, also they missed the courtesy call to query this before sending demanding letters to my home address!

As far as the L plates are concerned, yeah i've noticed that - its more when you have the Roofbox on and/or it is decal'ed up with the company lettering - people assume you are a novice and proceed to make your driving hell !

Of course my reply is always..well you should try that against my other car :D

You could argue with the garage that you own the car an your partner is the registered keeper.

It states on the log book that the registered keeper may not be the owner.
