front end suspension - replace consumables

Featured Replies

Ok, I am planning on getting a mate to replace all the bits on the front end suspension, mainly as I fitted two brand new RS2s a while back and the left one is now shot while the other is fine.

So my list is

top mounts

Bottom ball joints

track rod ends

rear consoles (upgraded)

front consoles

anti-roll bar bushes

Anything else?

Also, powerflex or the eBay equivalent for rear console?

Finally gonna be getting the parts from ECP. What is the best brand to buy on there? Lemforder?

Send a full list. Might be worth doing the droplinks while you are in there. Meyle HD seen like the ones to go for if you are not going really low.

On mine the inner track rod had gone, seems fairly common, so might be worth replacing the full track rod instead of just the end. Easy to replace with an adjustable with the wishbone out.

I went with a full superpro bush kit with anti lift. Much easier to refit front and rear console bushes than the standards as they come in 3 parts.

The front wishbone / console bush seemed unworn and very tough, if I was doing it again I probably wouldn't bother replacing this.

Lemforder are very good quality I think and what I used for track rods and ball joints.

Cheers, I did droplinks myself a few years back (meyle ones), so happy with those. Thanks for the tip 're the full track rod, didn't think they could wear or owt, had one done a new years back thinking it was a pot hole.

Figured I would just do the front wishbone on the basis of why not if it's out anyway, not exactly a pricy part And I'm garage should have all the proper kit to make it an easy job.

Been looking at the antilift Bush as well, and most people seem to be fans. My only issue is the harshness as Sheffield road are terrible! Lol.

As for console bushes,i have powerflex ones but i wish i didnt, loads of road noise and extra crashy-ness on sharp bumps.
The cupra console bush is a good compromise

I'm in Sheffield too! Though lucky to be on the south side where most of our roads have been resurfaced! No increase in harshness since fitting the superpros (though raised out on the coilovers at same time).

I'm a south Sheffield-ier too, but had to laugh on the patchwork road going down past golden plover yesterday.

I'm on stantard suspension, do you think it will be noticeable having antilift fitted?, thinking either them or those eBay poly-ones. On either vibration or noise?

Very useful tip that, thanks.  I was just gearing up to do a console bush change after noticing a clunk when I waggled the OSF wheel at 3 & 9 o'clock.  Couldn't quite work out what was making the clunk, but could see more movement than I was happy with at the rear bush.  Then just now (with your post fresh in my mind) I went out to spray some Plusgas into the threaded hole in the console that the front wishbone bolt goes into. With the wheel up off the ground, waggling it was easier and I could see movement, in-out, maybe a few millimetres, of the whole right track rod at the inner end. Presumably that's symptomatic of its inner balljoint being long gone? The clunk was definitely happening as that in-out movement was occurring.

Buying the track rod with TRE fitted is so cheap from ECP, one small issue I had was that the small end of the gaitor ends up being tighter as the new track rod was slightly bigger (at this point) than the original one, so you need to use a cable tie wrap there instead of a new CTC.  To make life easy, I bought new "large end" clips in case removing the old ones meant trashing them.

Wino: yes that's what was up with my inner track rod: play and in and out movement. The replacement was tight as anything.

Clip on the outer side of gaitor is re-useable.  Inner one is not.  I just used a ziptie, though was hard to get it proper tight.

Measure the old track rod and end, and adjust the new one to same size to get the alignment somewhere near right.

Lower / remove the wishbone and it was easy as to undo the inner rod at the balljoint with an adjustable: standard thread though was tight.  Never seen this mentioned before: everyone seems to talk of specific tools or bodging with mole grips.
