Front door arrestor/ Check Strap replacement

Featured Replies

I have tried searching everywhere for how to actually get to the back of the check strap in the A-Pillar to remove it and install a new one. Nowhere says how you actually go about doing this. Somebody must have done this before?

can anyone enlighten me?

thanks

Mike.

Nobody? Surely someone has done this?

I haven't done it yet but have researched it for the to do list. You have to remove the trim around the footwell and it bolts off. I'm led to believe its a bit fiddly. Good luck!

You can get to the bolts relatively pain free but i don't know how you'd remove anything from inside the A pillar itself, the hole is just about big enough for a finger and a 12mm 1/4' socket.

this is what I am saying, You can't get to the back of the straps in the A-Pillars to extract them out and put the new ones in. Removal of the kick panel trim reveals an inner metal skin which completely prevents you from accessing the back of the strap in the A-Pillar. The bolts are extremely accessible to unbolt it...

I am wondering if I have to take the inner arch lining out or the wings off?

A lad who's done it sent me this.....

Part no. It is 6Y0837249F I got it from skodaparts.com it's £11.19 . You have to remove the 4 screws, & push the strap back in towards the inner wing. At the bottom of the A panel remove the plastic cover, & feed your hand up into the hole & you should be able to feel the strap. You have to pull it out that way, it is a pain in the arse, but it is possible to do it.

hmmm, Well there is only one screw attaching it to the door and only two attaching it to the car. I have taken off the lower kick panel, which I think is what you are describing, and there is literally no way you can get to the back of it. There is sheet metal in the way?

Ok just as an update, I have managed to complete this now. Basically the holes in which to stick your hand to access the back of the straps were higher up, almost up inside the dash, and covered by sound proofing. You have to remove that first, then yes you can access the back but they are very awkward.

My doors no longer crush my legs when getting in the car now :-)

Well done and thanks for the update.

I wonder if there was a design tweak, during the facelift, that changed this access from what the 'workshop-manuals' site suggested, to what you finally found?

Was it actually necessary to remove any trim (other than the sound proofing you mention) or could it be done with all the plastics in place?

The lower kick panel trim needed to be removed, which revealed the sound proofing. On the drivers side, you have to first remove the bonnet popper handle before you can remove the kick trim panel (The kick trim panel is the square-ish piece which is under the dash right where your feet are in the footwell).

You also have to partially sprise the door sill trim off as it overlaps the kick panel trim where it joins. You will see what I mean if you try it.

Glad I finally got to the bottom of it :-)
