00526 - Brake Light Switch (F): Implausible Signal

Featured Replies

Coming out of a roundabout today I noticed the little wiggly triangle symbol on the instruments cluster had come up and stayed up(the one that comes on if you disable ESP). Toggling the ESP button had no effect. Stopped the engine and started it again, it went away. Drove 20 miles and no recurrence.

When I got home and scanned it, the only thing related would seem to be:

00526 - Brake Light Switch (F): Implausible Signal (intermittent).

Cleared it and it didn't come back (yet).

Is this likely to have been the cause of the cluster symbol?

Did you notice if the brake lights stayed on, even the pedal was not pressed? I had this and I just changed the brake pedal switch and that was it (quite cheap too ~ 12 €)...

I didn't notice at the time. It is definitely not stuck on now. I think I will change it as a matter of course - with an auto, I don't want to get stuck with the transmission lock engaged.

When it happened to you, did you get the wiggly triangle ESP icon illuminated?

Yes, I got the ESP light on (went off and back on erratically, intended to check it asap), didn't scan for errors though because I noticed the brake lights were still on, walking away from the parking lot.

So, I just changed the brake switch and problem was solved.

Thanks. Guess what I'm doing this weekend... :)

Considering it's a straight forward 10 minutes job, you'll have enough time left for the other important stuff: [emoji482] [emoji483] [emoji327] [emoji126]

From Erwin:

"The contact surface which the tappet is to touch should be

greased using polycarbamide grease -G 052 142 A2- before
installing the brake light switch."

By tappet do they mean the tip of the plunger?  This step seems to be missing from the free how-tos I have seen.

I guess it's the only logical conclusion that "tappet" is the plunger in this case...

I didn't know about this at the time and consequently, I didn't apply any grease, but I remember that there were some clumps of grease on the old one. So you could transfer some on the new one and that's it...in case you don't have any polycarbamide grease can lying around...  :)

At over £40 for the grease, I will be finding something else to use! :)
