quiet cat back exhaust

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I'm currently running a decat and piper cat back. Did 500 miles over the weekend and its fair to say it was a bit too much. What options are there for quieting it down without sacrificing power. Currently running just over 210bhp and 400nm. Thought about a standard back box but not sure how this will restrict power, affect the map.

Miltek are quiet.

I would get a bigger box added to your system if your happy with your tailpipe etc as it is?

Search for your local Longlife etc exhaust place, will be much cheaper than a new system too :)

I've got the smallest box fitted to mine that Longlife sell,it's quiet under all driving apart from full throttle/boost when it's still not really loud, just a nice tone.

Miltek are very subtle - they actually sound better from outside the car than in!

Not much deeper than standard

Cheers gents. I have just such a company a few miles from work I'll give them a shout as I do quite like the tail pipe.

It won't affect either the power or the map.

As above the stock system is said to be good for 220bhp... that's inclusive of the cat I believe! So the best option to quieten yours down would be to get a second hand stock cat back exhaust and have it retrofitted up to your de-cat.

Use the correct exhaust original type box, and perhaps the problem will go away ?

can you fit the uprated downpipe/decat onto the oe exhaust system?

I have to say I'm shocked that you think the exhaust is too loud. Because of how diesels work they are very quiet. You can run it without any exhaust and it makes very little difference to the noise. From the sounds of it the Cobra exhaust is tuned to make the car louder. Very odd.

I would definitely go back to the standard system or get a custom straight pipe made up. I ran straight pipes on my TT TDi and they were very quiet.

Remember the standard system is one piece from the DP back, so to refit a standard system you would need to cut the exhaust and bodge some sort of connection to allow it to be fitted on the car, or remove the rear axle and fit it in one piece like it was in the factory!

I can't believe people would suggest refitting a standard exhaust, when the stainless one fitted is a lifetime job and just needs a box adding to quieten it down.

It might have no box at all currently, as that is a option with the Piper systems :)

Presume you've never heard a VRS with no silencers and cat?
Like you say dervs usaully are quiet, but these PD engines in Fabias and Golfs I've heard with no silencers are very loud!
IMO they sound awful with straight through systems, not a nice sound at all.

You can, you need a reducer though as the de-cat downpipe is bigger bore than the standard system.
I know Piper supply them with the DP, not sure if other manufacturers do :)

When you say 1 piece, you mean one centre section and the back box?

I've changed the back box on mine twice as the chrome trim is part of the exhaust annoyingly and to keep it perfect I just change the rear box.

I've not heard a vRS without the exhaust, but I have heard a PD110 Passat and it was very quiet at idle. I used to work for Degussa in Wolfgang, who do all the catalysts for pretty much every car made in Europe and they used to run all the diesels in the workshop with no noise restrictions even without exhausts whereas the petrol cars required compulsory ear defenders when they were fitting up the prototype exhausts.

if you're in the northeast and fancy a milltek give me a shout - i was thinking of swapping for a noisier one (because im childish!!) lol
