Impressive space in estate

Featured Replies

In preparation for a holiday in a few weeks' time, I decided to see whether I'd be able to fit everything in the car to get to the airport.  The question I needed to answer was whether we could take my wife's mobility scooter as well as her wheelchair - not to mention her mother and all our luggage.

I was impressed with the result.  Altogether, I managed to fit in the following:

  • Three adults (driver and two passengers) in comfort - i.e. without having bags piled on their laps or under their feet
  • Three full-size hard suitcases
  • Two maximum size wheeled carry-on bags
  • A large wheelchair
  • A not-that-small mobility scooter (Pride GoGo Elite Traveller Plus)
  • Space for several smaller soft bags and coats etc.

It all fitted surprisingly well and it wasn't even piled it up to the roof - in fact I could still see behind with the interior mirror.

I really didn't think this would be possible and am again further impressed by this car, which has already impressed me in so many other ways.

You're right - it is a tardis. I've done three week camping holidays in France with two young kids, a massive family tent WITH A CARPET, four chairs and a table, bedding, inflatable beds, a four ring gas stove (and fuel) and two bikes and still not had anything extra in the passenger compartment! The problem is my family assumes everything can be taken, and therefore pack it!

Also last week, I was in a total panic because our oven blew up and I was expecting three mums in the house on Mothering Sunday - the prospect of no oven and lunch was not a good one. So I ordered an oven on the internet - and after various delays it was delivered to a distribution depot in St Albans on Saturday. So it was VRS to the rescue time and a 100 mile return trip to get it first thing on Saturday. A - I really enjoyed doing that and B - how many cars can you have an enjoyable drive in, sun roof open, Sport mode on, with a full size oven in the boot!!!

Pray you don't have a flat tyre !!

That's seriously impressive, it's good to se a 'real world' use of the storage in the Octavia.

This is the whole reason I have an estate. The amount of camping gear we have never ceases to amaze me. Add to that children, dog, food, toys and beer etc and there simply aren't many estate cars that have the capacity of the Octy.

Space is impressive. Did you manage to prevent the 6mm thick MDF boot floor from buckling under all that weight? My 9 year old busted my floor the first time she climbed in to the boot (as kids do). I replaced it with 12mm ply and stuff you can call carpet.

Same here. A car with less than 500 liters of boot space is simply not an option for my family. Every single time we go to our summer home the boot is packed to the brim. Or at least has been on previous cars. Time will tell how much I'll be able to cram inside the Octy.

Didn't manage to break the floor on my mk2 estate. We'll see how it goes with the Mk3 later in the year!

Is that the variable floor you're referring to or the main one?  To get all that in I had to lower the variable floor so that it's lying flat on the main one below, so I suppose the two together are pretty robust.  Have you found that the main boot floor is weak?

Both floors combined is probably more like a normal bootfloor.

Even the hatch boot is surprising. With the back seats down and the shelf out I once had to take a dismantled garden fence to the tip and, looking at the pile of planks on the driveway, I estimated between two and three visits.

It all went in in one go with space left over for maybe 50% more palings !!

Ahh, I missed that you have the VBF. Mine was the bog standard (literally) bendy boot floor. The VBF is likely more substantail.
