Replacing the speakers in the doors?

Featured Replies

I recently bought a 2002 1.9 SDI estate, which has a non-standard Sony CD/Radio fitted, but retains the original speakers, which are are knackered - there's no bass, just plastic rattling.

As a music techie, dodgy sound quality really gets my goat so I'd like to replace the speaker drivers in the front doors at the very least (hopefully the rear doors at a later stage) but was wondering how easy getting the door card off without damage is, and also whether anyone has any info or pics on the speakers that are installed in there so I know what I'm getting into before I start? Would also like to be able to get parts before I start ripping it apart.

Also, how easy is it to replace the standard audio cables with higher quality hifi cables?

My car's not one with central locking or elec windows so I don't have to worry too much about other electrics.

Sorry if this is basic stuff, I'm a relative noob with stuff like this. Thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm not looking to fit mental really expensive aftermarket speakers or anything. Just whatever I can get that will fix the sound quality issues.

All been covered befre. Please do a search of the "In Car Entertainment" sub forum. Might also be some info in Fabia Mk1.

Essentially....

 - Up to 6.5" component speakers. Mounting depth no more than 60-62mm.

 - Need Autoleads or similar plastic spacers (or MDF rings) to mount the speakers to the door (originals have a spacer/mount built in).

 - Speaker wiring: Need to run wires to the crossover, then on to the woofer and tweeter anyway. Would advise against major surgery trying to run new wires the whole way.

Fabia Mk1 doors produce a lot of mid-bass. For anything lower you'll need a sub.

Cheers Vindaloo. Apologies for not searching.

As a music techie, I needn't remind you of ensuring speakers are phased and impedance is that of radio ( or near enough)and man enough to handle the sound levels you want.

You'll need to amplify your speakers to gain any real benefit out of them, your head unit will not really be up to the task.

Whilst you can buy speakers that are more suited to run off the head unit you'll never get the full potential out of them, certainly not enough to warrant upgrading the speaker wire.

My best advice to you would be to head over to the Talk Audio Forum to gain some knowledge before you spend your money.

Hahaa nope, you don't need to but it's appreciated nonetheless.

Didn't think so - but since you know what I'm talking about, amazing how many don't know that.

You mean sensitivity I take it rather than impendence? The higher the sensitivity the better a pair of speakers will sound powered by a head unit. I don't know the exact science behind it I just remember quite a few people being told that by the guru's over at talk audio

Very few car speakers will run at less than 4ohms unless your talking subwoofers which quite commonly run at 2 or 1 ohms.

Either way it sounds like the op just wants a cheap pair of speakers to replace his broken ones, which their are a abundance to choose from. Their is no need to even contemplate replacing speaker wire it'll make little to no difference what so ever.

I just want some that can actually handle the concept of a bass guitar/kick with a flat EQ! Good to know about the speaker wire though. Saves me loads of effort.

As as already been said by vindaloo the Fabia's door construction is actually pretty good. It's does a good job at creating a sealed enclosure.

If your not amping the speakers or investing in a decent pair then the only thing I would suggest, is to mount your speaker using MDF that and coat the inner door skin with some Sound Deadening tiles making sure you cover any holes.

That will help eliminate any loss of mid-bass by ensuring panel resonance is kept to a minimum.

Another tip would be to buy some door card clips because the chances are you will break some.

I have included a pic to show what I have done with my car as an example. The Sound deadening I applied was some cheap stuff I brought from Ebay, but the stuff that Silent Coat makes is better but a little bit more expensive.

Hi guys,

Went to a scrappy today with the intention of grabbing a few bits and found a Fab with speakers intact - but I didn't realise the speakers were riveted into the door?

Yes they unfortunately, drill them out.

In theory you could gut the OEM speakers and reuse the remnant spacers.... However, that assumes they're mechanically sound and aren't buzzing in the first place.

Or drill them out, and remount using nuts/bolts etc.
