NFDA WINTER 2015 DEALER ATTITUDE SURVEY RESULTS REVEALED

Published 02/03/2015 00:00:00 in Press Releases

“The relationship between car dealers and car manufacturers recorded an average score of 6.9 - 0.2 points lower than the summer 2014 survey, suggesting a slight change in the relationship – a trend also shown in the last survey”, said Sue Robinson, Director of the National Franchised Dealers Association commenting on the NFDA Winter 2015 Dealer Attitude Survey.  This year’s winter survey received a response rate of 38% of car dealers from 28 participating dealer networks taking part, and is the second survey undertaken using the revised question format. The new survey has a standardised question format and all responses are on a scale of 1 to 10. This has made it easier for dealers to complete and makes it easier for us to analyse. We have found that the new format has led to an increase in survey responses.   Robinson continued, “It was positive to see that Mercedes, Kia and Suzuki were the top scoring franchises in the all important question 11 where dealers rate their manufacturers overall. Both Mercedes and Kia were in the top three in the summer survey but Suzuki has moved up from fifth place to third, even though its score remains static. Land Rover has fallen out of the top three and now resides in fifth place.  “Renault continued to increase its score in question 11 building on improvements started last summer. Their dealer network returned an encouraging score of 7.0. A year ago they were at the bottom of the table with a score of 4.0. Their results in many of the survey questions were also poor in particular around profit potential, standards and dealer/manufacturer relationships. This has significantly changed in the current survey. Volvo and Honda have also seen improved scores, although these scores are still fairly neutral they are encouraging and are backed up by improvements in questions across the survey.”   The survey which has been published today shows an average recorded score of 6.5 in the overall value of the franchise.

  • The score is down 0.1 points since the summer 2014 survey and down 0.7 points since last winter.
  • Mercedes, Kia Suzuki and Audi were recorded as the top 4 franchises.
  • The least valued franchises by respondents are Skoda, Seat, Peugeot and Alfa Romeo

Dealers returned an average score of 4.9 when asked how satisfied they were with their new car targeting process. This score indicated that in general dealers were dissatisfied with the targeting process with their manufacturers.

  • Only four franchises returned a score of 7.0 and above, indicating a significant level with satisfaction in these brands. Suzuki was the top scoring franchise with a score of 8.0, Land Rover was second at 7.9, Mercedes third with 7.6 and Kia fourth with a score of 7.2.
  • With a score of 2.7 Skoda have the lowest score for this question.

Profit and profitability ratings also saw a decline. The results suggest that dealers are less optimistic about future profit returns than they were previously.

  •  When rating the profit return by representing their franchise, an average score of 6.0 was recorded. This score is down just 0.1 point since last summer, although it is 0.6 points lower than last winter.
  • When asked about the future profitability of their business the all dealer average declined 6.5 to 6.3.

When dealers were asked ‘how satisfied are you that your manufacturer dealer standards are fair and reasonable’, the average score for the winter 2015 survey was 6.5.

  • This score was down 0.2 points from the summer survey and 0.1 points since last winter. As an average, the responses have changed little over the past year.
  • Volvo has seen the most improvement in score for this question scoring 6.0 up 1.3 from the summer.
  • Citroen had the greatest decline in score down 1.8 from the summer to 4.8.

Robinson concluded, “With the declines in scores for certain key questions, there is still scope with certain manufacturers to develop their relationships with their dealer networks as some still fall well below average in many areas of the survey.”

So does this indicate that even the Skoda dealers don't like the way the brand is heading with their new corporate styling, lack of sportiness and overpricing?

Skoda Dealership might have less Customers back for Warranty Work & Skoda UK Customer Services might have less car buyers

having to raise cases if,

Skoda CZ & the VWG start being a bit better with Design, Manufacturing, Materials, Workmanship & Quality Control.

Then the Dealers do proper PDI's using Qualified Technicians only.

The Linkedin profile says it all.  Consumed with sales growth but no mention of customer satisfaction.

MY experience of a main dealer -hole in rubber fuel pipe return to tank. Main dealer solution - replace ALL in and out fuel pipes. Cost =£160 + similar labour cost. We did a bodge job , replacing hose section with one from an old bike. Then headed off to VAG TPS. Result- "fuel pipe cut to length". Cost = 0.50p.

SAYS IT ALL IMHO.

That's outrageous. Hope you told them to shove any chance of future custom and that you will name and shame all over the net.

It is the dark underbelly of what actual is going on.

A combinations of factors do not bode well for Skoda.

  1. Dealers expressing that the Franchise is not a valueable or wanted by car dealers
  2. Products that are now priced too close to the perceived higher market brands of VW/Audi
  3. Lack of design styling and sporty/rallying manifestation in the brand ie no Fabia VRS replacement.

Unless they do something quickly about these points it would appear the Skoda brand has peaked.  I am suprised how few Fabia 3 I have seen on the road since it is supposedly What Car car of the year, how long has it been on sales?

I agree with all of that 100%,I haven't seen more than 2 mk3 Fabs, though having said that,my neighbour is thinking about ordering one to replace his old mk1.

and im considering replacing the missus's Citigo with one -

now the baby has arrived, the pram, and all the other crap wont fit in the boot of the Citigo, and dont want to have all the stuff just in the car.

that said... i am looking at options like Fiesta, Polo, Ibiza, i20.. etc..

I know 5 friends with Fiestas [some are on their 2nd or 3rd ] none have had any problems whatsoever, not sure about the boot size on the Fiesta though. You could go leftfield and radical and buy a Roomster, you'll never be short of space options and the kids will love gazing up at that panoramic roof.

I've been with Skoda for a long time. I still very much like the cars but it's there pricing that's made me say goodbye.

The price is too high and I'm not saying that skoda doesn't deserve a premium tag they make excellent cars......but that's not Skoda's core value....The underdog the surprise car. The value and sensible choice car.

I feel kia and a likes have taken that place.

Let's put it this way I never looked at changing brand until the mk3 Octavia.

This is just my personal opinion but skoda peaked at what they should be seen as at the octavia mk2FL and citigo. After that point they changed to take on the premium brands......price wise.

Very little differentiation between VW and Skoda now.

All they have to do is make a GTI Jetta

^Wot he said.

My Mk2 VRS was a steal, I never felt like I'd got anything but a good deal.

Mk2 - Mk3 prices have gone up about 40% since I bought my car in 2007.

My wages have gone up about 10% and other things cost more. Relatively, Skoda is now an expensive brand to me

I had a Kia Sedona with the big Merc diesel, for 5 years, fantastic car and great aftersales attention from the dealer too. Before I bought my Roomster I was looking at Mazdas range very closely.

I know the missus wouldnt feel comfortable driving a roomster - convinced its too big...

I suggested a Mazda3 (previous generation) and was told too big. Mazda2 isnt brilliant imo, test drove one before the citigo, and the interior made me drowsy, and quite tinny...  (yeah i know the citigo isnt exactly much better, but a mazda shoud be...)

Seriously, get SWMBO to at least test drive a Roomster,if i remember correctly its only about the same length give or take as a Golf.My dear old mum who is nearly 80 loves driving it.She too thought it might be too big for her [raised rear roofline and interior size convinced her of this] but can place it to within 2 inches of my Ford Transit on the driveway, bumper to bumper when parking.Believe me,after a while you learn to love its looks because its not like all the other bland boxes on wheels.

Hmm, my local dealer has franchises for both Skoda and Peugeot (also Kia though).

haha, my dealers comment about DRL falling apart, "we should be able to glue that back together"

I'll tell you one thing.  BMW may be up themselves but they wouldn't dare treat a customer like that.  Skoda need some major work.  They were the quivalent of Dacia now they think they are on a par wit BMW and Audi.  No your palce Skoda, stay where we all liked it, fair price for a fair car, never the cutting edge and never the most powerful, but just about there.  Liked that Skoda

Have a look at Dacia, suprisingly good for the money, "You do the maths".

As Hamster said "f you want a spacious family car that is cheap and cheerful, there is no logical alternative".

I agree,  I'm sure they're picking sales that would have once gone to Skoda.

I agree,  I'm sure they're picking sales that would have once gone to Skoda.

I have seen lots of Dacias, Dusters and the Logan/Sandero clearly taking sales from Citreon/Peugeot/Renault in rural France but making more of an appearance in Wales and I imagine many places where the people are a bit more shrew and not such badge snobs so Skoda sales particularly will suffer as these areas have been traditionally good place for Skoda to get sales.  Should get my Logan if a couple of weeks, Laureate spec with Media-Nav systems, near 600 litre boot, £35 road tax, 50 mpg plus etc.  Yes only 0-60 in 11 seconds but seemed a fairly comfortable cruiser and all for less than £10K (petrol version).

On the basis of early rust issues, and the not great safety testing, im not big on dacia just yet, until they prove they are improving..

But theres Not alot else out there at the moment...

Thank goodness that Volkswagen and Skoda never have Corrosion Issues.

Never any on the new Yeti, Mk3 Octavia or the likes in the recent years.
