Fabia 1.2 htp battery light stopping on

Featured Replies

Hi chap and chapess's

This is my first post on here ,so hello to everyone I've Got a problem with my fabia 1.2 Htp.

The battery light came on on Friday night and has stopped on since . As far as I know it was on the original battery , so I've put a new one on it. And the light is still on.

I've checked the alternator for charging and its putting over 14v into the battery. So it's has me a bit stumped.

any help much appreciated

Thanks in advance

Alternator load wire?

Try unplugging the two-way signal connector from the back of the alternator, then switching on the ignition.  If the battery light is still on, there's something wrong with the wiring (or the electrics inside the cabin); if it now isn't on, I'd say there must be something wrong with the alternator.

Thanks for the replies guys , I've disconected the two way connector and the battery light is off. So it's looking like a new alternator for me. I also noticed that the rear heated window is also not working . I presume it must be powered direct from the alternator. Due to high amp load.

Anyway cheers guys

I forget where I read it now, but there are certain 'non-essential' functions that the electrical system control module (in cabin) can/will disable if it measures the system voltage at a level lower than it's happy with (and it has already tried to fix this by raising idle revs). Two of these functions that I remember are heated rear window, and heated seats (if fitted). Both are high-current devices as you say.

I'm struggling to figure out what may be wrong with your alternator for the charge warning light to be on whilst it's managing to put 'over 14V' into the battery; and yet seemingly not managing to charge it sufficiently.

Maybe the carbon brushes are worn to the point that they are barely contacting the sliprings? Haynes says minimum brush length is 5mm. I don't know if it's possible to get the voltage regulator / brushpack off to inspect this without removing the alt from the engine. Would surely be tight for access in situ.
