Fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Fuel tank is 50 liters.

1. I always tank my fuel full until I get the first click from the fuel nozzle.

How many liters is this below the fuel tank capacity?

I know it depends on some factors like fuel nozzle speed etc, but is there some good average?

2. When fuel needle gets to the red and you get low fuel warning, how many liters are left in the tank?

3. How accurate do you find trip computer calculator?

I have done a trip over the weekend, had my fuel tank full until the first click from the fuel nozzle before start.

I had done 580km and its just about to get low fuel warning.

Trip computer say 6L average.

Doesnt sound right to me.

I have a petrol vRS, so I'm not sure how much of this is pertinent, but...

I find that after the first fuel nozzle "click", if I'm going to brim fill the tank, I can get another 2.4-2.85 litres in. (This is in contrast to my Mk2 vRS, where after the first click I could get in another 9.5-10 litres!)

Not going to answer the question about the fuel reserve, because I think if you read previous threads on here about it, the general feeling seems to be that the warnings for diesel and petrol models are at different points (the anecdotal evidence and underlying theory being that the warning on the diesel is earlier to give you more chance to fill up, as running a diesel dry is much more of a big deal).

What do you mean by the trip computer calculator? Are you talking about the fuel consumption figures, or something else? (If you are talking about fuel consumption, then in my case overall the trip computer is about 0.75% too generous compared to the actual figures I'm getting. That said, on individual measurements it has been anything from 1.9% too generous to 2.4% too pessimistic, but usually it's within 1% either way, which is more than good enough for me.)

The most I've been able to put in my 2.0TDI is about 45 litres, and that's when it was showing empty on the trip computer and I ignored the fuel pump's first click.

The diesels do seem to be very cautious about not wanting you to run out, but on the up side, the trip computer is very accurate in mine.

The most I have got into a tank is 48 litres, but that was 3rd click I think. It was also after doing 15-20 miles after '0 range'.

From the low fuel warning which I get at 45 miles, I can do the 45 miles the car thinks it can do, plus maybe another 20 if I am feeling brave, so maybe 5 litres?

3. How accurate do you find trip computer calculator?

I find the on-board computer pretty accurate compared to my hand calculations.

Have answered in bold above :)

1st click to 2nd click I can manage about 1 - 1.5 litres

48 litres was the most I have filled up with the range showing about 30 miles to empty

Computer is about 1-2 mpg overly optimistic on my car.

Doesn't sound so wrong to me depending on how you've been driving.

6L/100km would give you ~700km to empty (based on your statement about 580km just before low warning) which would be around 42L of fuel.

The only real way to know is see how many litres it takes when you fill up.

I run my car down close to 0 as much as possible & my usual fill is around 43L.

With the diesel it seems that the distance to empty is quite conservative.

The only time I've managed to fill up close to 50L was when (like meb90) I ran past 0km where it took something like 48L).

I find the trip computer is very accurate (reading 5.4L average) & fuelly shows (52mpg ~5.4L/100km).

I'd never go down to anything like empty!

If my read-out is roughly right, the car has averaged about 37 mpg for its whole life so far, which is only about 1700 miles, and hardly any long journeys.

I'm expecting this to go up quite a bit as the car settles in and longer runs come about.

as others have said, I always go for 3 clicks (with a pause in between).

Particularly in winter the nozzle can click off too early due to the differences in fuel compared to summer specification.

In the UK they used to put signs up at the petrol stations warning of this) but I can't say I've noticed them here.

I generally put as much petrol as I can, except when outside temperature is well above 20°C.

I filled up 47l at most. In this occurrence I still made 70km after the warning light went on, out of a total of 546km.

So I assume it remains around 15% autonomy when the light goes on.

I did refuel today and it drank 42 liters for 580km which is 7L / 100km.

I was expecting 6L, although 4 people + luggage and 140km/h highway probably makes a difference..

Lets not forget DTUK box as well, which might explain why my trip computer is inaccurate.

I have a Greenline, so the opposite end of the spectrum to the vRS fun team.

That said here's my stats after 2886 miles from new, in the last 68 days (so that's wearing engine in and Jan-Feb, winter driving).

The Long Term trip states I have averaged 33 mph at 64.5 mpg.

My pump receipts show actual is 61.32 mpg

I do a mix of roads, about 50% motorway, and spend more time in the outside lane than the slow one, so I'm sure someone could do even better, if they tried.

I have read somewhere that the fuel tank has a reserve of 7 litres.  I can't remember where I saw this.  Can anyone confirm if this is correct.  If so, there should be 57 litres before you run out.

Shouldnt it be 43 + 7 then?

Yes, this is on the owners manual: 50l including a reserve of 7l.

There was a recent post on the same subject from someone on the continent who squeezed just over 55 litres into the 50 litre tank.

I remember TMWNA commenting on that he must have an enormous pair to run the tank down so low.

  • 7 months later...

My diesel tank I would assume is 50L, I have never run out but have done a further 15 miles after the computer stated zero!  Most I ever got in was 49L, so I suspect the tank empty warning is quite pessimistic.

Like most cars the computer mpg is optimistic - about 5%, Long Term claim is 67 mpg, but pump shows me 64
