Air Conditioning advise needed

Featured Replies

The air con on my 05 Classic petrol 1.6 MPI (MK2) is a bit weak compared to my last few cars, but it does the job. I know someone with an 08 Fabia that has fairly weak air con too and it's been weak since day 1... Skoda said it was perfectly normal. I'd only worry if the temp doesn't drop when you're using it ;) .

Strange, thread went quiet now. I wonder why? Maybe I think I did the right thing by going to a specialist as advised by the members.

Genuinely I went to the air con

You asked what the problem was with the noise and the non - working aircon,  and I and others told you it was a sign of low gas.  The only way of sorting this is to use a specialist,  which you have done.  What do you want? Congratulations for doing the right thing or another argument about what you should have done?

As said countless times,  nobody on the forum is in a position to say where any leak is or how long it will be before the gas is lost again,  so of course it has gone quiet.  For once the forum has been used in a sensible manner.  Problem on your car,  ask for advice, advice offered, act on the advice given, (hopefully) problem solved, topic closed.

The very tone of your last post proves beyond all doubt that you are totally intent on nothing more than provoking another argument and winding folk up who have taken time and bothered to give you the best advice possible.

Genuinely I went to the air con specialist, you can even phone them to verify. It wasn't a intent to stir up, I do not like to waste my time on these forums winding peeps up.

So you admitted I did the right thing by going to a air con specialist but haven't noticed that the so called air con specialist you wanted me to go to did something illegal.

Now can peeps understand that I come on these forums for help instead of going to garages because I don't trust 99% of garages.

If your reply is off topic and argumentative then please do not reply in my thread and this applies to everyone here.

Maybe time to :lock:

Well done.  Sew an air-conditioning badge on your sleeve.  You can do your fire making badge next week. :sun:

Admitted? I for one am pleased, no , ecstatic that you have finally followed the advice given to you!

But here we go YET again -- you have contradicted yourself again!

Your post saying that you had the system regassed stated CATEGORICALLY that the specialist checked the system with UV light and did not detect any leak. So how in hell has your specialist done something ILLEGAL by regassing the system? How you can say I missed the point that he did the job illegally is totally beyond me.

It would have been illegal IF HE HAD FOUND A LEAK!!!! But he didn't so it was perfectly LEGAL to top up the gas. He wouldn't have done so if he HAD found a leak because that would have been against the law.

Think what you are writing for God's sake!

Off topic? Hardly. Argumentative? There's only one person on here who is causing arguments, and it ain't me.

As Simbo says, this is an OPEN FORUM, it is NOT YOUR thread. The fact that you post on here means that you EXPECT replies -- with some of the comments you post, you can't expect anything else but the responses you have received from me, and many others, in this thread and others that you have posted in.

Trust what you are told for a change and you may be rewarded with a bit a respect on here, something that you cannot expect with your attitude at the moment.

Get a grip, we've had enough.

Ok if theres no leak then where is the AC gasses mysteriously dissapearing to?

  • Author

All AC systems lose a certain amount of gas over time. That is why it is advisable for regular air con services and regas.

Ok so its normal to re-gas every 2 months for the Octavia 2 model?

Who's on first, Whats on 2nd, I dunnos on third

Last week I paid £25 to have a punctured tyre repaired. What a fool I was. The local garage only charge 50p to use their air line. I could have gone in every day for 50 days and blown the punctured tyre up for what that ripoff puncture repair cost......

Ye but I have no leak but somehow the AC gasses are mysteriously disappearing like magic and its normal to re-gas AC every 2 months for the Octavia 2. That's the summary of this thread so far as well as a lot of off topic argumentative posts (definition of a troll). For the new readers out with similar AC problems hoping this thread will guide you then I just feel sorry for you all as you be wasting your time here.

Well, clearly you do have a leak if the gas is gone in two months. Consider that when an aircon specialist looks at the system they only have a limited time to test it.  A well hidden tiny pinhole leak can be enough to let the gas leak away over the course of a few weeks, but not big enough to show any significant leakage over the hour or so the aircon engineer is looking at the car. They have re-gassed it for now, but by the sound of it it will almost certainly be low/empty within another 2 months (or even less if the leak is getting worse over time, which is quite possible).

Whilst it may be theoretically possible to keep topping up the system over & over again, any decent aircon engineer should refuse to do it, for all of the reasons already given by others.

I suppose you could keep going to a different engineer each time but bear in mind when aircon systems leak they can also draw moisture in, which can then damage expensive parts like the compressor, so would end up being far more costly in the long run.

As many others have already said, either get it fixed properly or just accept that you now have a car without aircon and open the windows!

Not trying to hijack your thred but I have a problem with my aircon when I got the car it didn't work but I never bothered to get it looked at I just opend the windows lol but I thought I would try and get it fixed for this summer.luckily me brother inlaw is a refrigeration engineer ,when he checked the gas there was plenty in and he made shore the recommended pressure was in there but still no air con pretty shore there is no leaks it just refuses to come on and give cold air.could this be down to the compressor it's self or is there another posable problem?

And how would I go about checking what is at fault myself?

Cheers kev.

Mine was fine pressure wise, but the compressor was dead, so it didn't work.

This thread is getting quite heated due some misunderstanding on the OP's part and Mike being the helpful one and becoming frustrated. I suggest Laureen steps back and tries to understand what the root cause of the problem is and then use Mike's and other's advice to resolve the issue.

Mike I know your trying to be helpful but count to ten and breath, it is clear the OP is not grasping the suggestions on the table.

Laureen others here including Mike will help you no end but you need to help them to help you.

My days of trying to help Laureen are over. No matter what help and advice is offered, it will never be appreciated

Mike

Mike,  you are married aren't you?

When your wife asks you something is she looking for a solution or is she voicing her thoughts in order to come up with her own solution?  Mine does the latter, therefore all you need do is nod & look concerned.  This is the difference between men & women.  Men think they have to fix everything.  They ask for advice & expect a fix in return and if asked for advice it's wired into them to offer a solution.  Women ask for advice as a means of working through their problem in their own way.  Often they just want a sounding board.   (this is about the only thing of value that I learnt during relationship counselling).

I wasn't trying to defend her.  Just pointing out that help probably isn't being asked for.

I just noticed this forum hasn't got a "block user" facility.  I use it on other forums - it's excellent.

It does have one though.

I dont understand? I did listen to your advice which is go and see a specialist in which I did.

Can we please not argue.

  • 4 weeks later...

Mine ended up being corrosion on the air con rad. Was impossible to detect the corrosion without at least getting the car up on a ramp and inspecting the bottom of the AC condenser.

Bottom engine tray had to come off and a decent torch up in under to see the bottoms of the rads.

Price to replace in 2013 was about £300 all in. This included gas refill with correct lubrication.

I don't personally recommend places like KWIK FIT, since they didn't full with enough gas on the first attempt at me refilling (AC service), which delayed finding the actual cause of the low gas until it was up on a ramp in a garage being investigated properly.

I noticed that when in use the indication of low gas was hissing/gurgling from the vents as soon as the AC was turned on.

Another symptom was when set to blow through the face vents, the AC was only coldish on the drivers side of the middle vent, being much warmer on the passenger side.

Try a Bosch approved garage. That's what a VAG specialist advised me They noted a possible cause of my lack of a/c, which luckily, after I replaced it (the condenser), my a/c is now working fine.

Unfortunately this is one of those issues that without spending money and going through the possible faults, I think it could be difficult to solve.
