Squeaky vRS (BRAKES!)

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Hope you can help.

I have a 6 month old Fabia vRS with roughly 8000 miles.

Around 6-8 weeks ago the car developed a sqeak - squeal which is coming from the passenger side wheel area! It is most noticable at low speed up to around 25mph.

The noise is never noticable from cold, the car needs to be run for a few miles and it STOPS as soon as you brake but starts again as soon as you release the brake. Also the noise occurs in a straight line and when you are steering.

The garage has had the car in twice for this, the first time they cleaned out some brake dust which made NO DIFFERENCE, The second time they had the car all day and claimed to have cleaned the disks which they tried to charge me

So..where do I go now' date=' two mechanics now recon it is a hot spot on the pads

DO I ring the Skoda Service Manager and read him his horoscope?? What worries me is that he is going to say.."sorry son you have invalidated your warranty"......

I think I need new pads (under warranty) I am right!

What makes you think they'd say you've invalidated your warranty? Is the car modified? If it was me, I'd ring the Skoda Service Manager and explain that you've had 2 independent mechanics look at it and both have diagnosed it as hotspots on the pad ... how does he think that sounds? He'll probably get the car booked back in and you might find that his mechanics agree with your diagnosis.

Whether this is a warranty item or not, I'm not sure. Pads are a wear and tear item and are very dependent on driving style ... probably something that you'd need to talk to a couple of dealers and maybe Skoda customer services about?

Chris

I had exactly the same problem with my vRS but it seems to have cleared up. It seemed to start after I jet washed the front wheel/brakes whilst washing the car. It was driving my crazy for a while but I think a good thrash and getting the brakes really hot seems to have cured it.

Get the garage to fix it - there is absolutely nothing warranty-wise that they can pull you up on as long as genuine Skoda parts are used - the originals were put back so no probs there.

Alternately you could make headway toward rejecting the car - my brother rejected his vRS at about one year old (though my family did buy 4 from them so we're special) and got offered a swap for a brand spanker  He took a huge discount on an Octy II in the end but it shows you can reject at any time if the car is not 'of satisfactory quality' as stated in the sale of goods act.

Have exactly the same thing my self with mine 5 month old car, however over the past couple of weeks it appears to have gone. Spoke to the dealer about this and they mentioned something about build up of break dust, not sure I believe them though !!

From my experience there is a vast amount of bull**** being produced by dealers about this subject - what they and Skoda uK seem to miss is that the problem is a major one in terms of its ability to severely pi55 the driver offf and it WILL have a bearing on what car we buy next

The vRS is slipping lower down the short list for my next car with every failed " cure " and episode of bull****

We know they read this forum .... its about time they had the balls to actually make a comment rather than lurk in the background like a poor imitation of a spy ..... IMHO of course -

I've got the same problem as well that the dealer has so far failed to fix, only one visit though. The car is 7 months old and the brakes have been squeaking for at least 6 of them. It's seriously irritating when crawling in traffic with what sounds like a person with a squeaky wheel barrow walking along behind you.

I agree. Mine has been doing this for the past month now. It's due a service so I'm gonna mention it and hope it gets sorted.

But this is the main reason I got rid of my old car. Granted it was a Fiat. But after 3 trips to the garage it still sounded like a rusty pulley when turning right.

And now it happening on the Furby. I dont need bad drivers to get road rage anymore.

Mine sounds like a pair of mating wildebeest when i'm reversing ... expect to see david attenborough appear with a film crew to watch the spectacle

Mine squeaks on braking as well not always just sometimes maybe 1 in 10 brakes on average, my car is just over 1 year old I hope the squeaking goes away soon !

The other problem I have is misting up problems as I've mentioned in another thread.

These are the only problems I have with the car which is otherwise excellent, but these two problems do irritate me

I hope the squeaking goes away soon

sadly - i doubt it will :(

Thats something different and there is a remedy for that.

Just wondering what a hot spot on the pad actually is..lol. I would have thought as pad resurface would have sorted that if that was the case. And I doubt if warranty would cover brake pads, customer services may to keep you happy.

How hard to you drive the car, usually the problem does stem from the fact that the rear brakes on the Fabia do little to nothing during everyday driving and they dont get hot enough to burn up moisture etc that settles on them over night so rust/dirt builds up causing squeaking noises.

Remove the rear pads, reface them and reset the pistons in the calipers. Also make sure the shims on the carrier are clean and the pad fits easily into them (if they dont remove a little of the thick black paint along the edge of the pad until they do). Dont assemble the brakes with copper grease on the back of the pad. There is a 3M branded adheasive on the back of them. This is supposed to stick the pad to the caliper so when you ease off the brakes the pad travles back along the carrier and of the disc.

I've not had trouble like this (yet??) apart from when the car was below it's first 1k miles, did a few good brake-testing sessions after I scared myself (+ SWMBO) when I had to do an emergency stop with only a few hundred miles on the clock.

Could you not heat the rears up by say driving 'on the handbrake' - or does the handbrake switch also cause the power to cut like the normal brake does?

new vRS owner. just a quick one, has anybody had any probs with brakes sticking/binding after rain/car washing once the car has been left for a while??

Mine used to do this, if I washed it in the evening and left it then when I released the handbrake in the morning I'd need to reverse by using the pedal to get it moving down my very steep drive.

This I'm assuming is what F***ed up my pads and discs on the rear. Needed new ones waaaaaay before I should because it upset the pad in the caliper meaning that they were only wearing on part of the pad, and obviously killed the disc while making horrid noises everytime I used the brakes.

Once you've washed the car, I'd suggest taking it for a spin to dry out the discs and pads so they don't rust together. Never really had problems with it after rain though. Just when washing it.

I had this on my CTR eariler in the year. Dealer also said it was basically a build up of brake dust, needing cleaned and copper greased. I have a feeling it started a while after I bought a hose and started washing/rinsing the car with that, rather than using a watering can

I started avoiding hitting the wheels directly with the spray from then on and also taking it out for a spin after washing every time too. Will keep this up with my new furby vRS and hope it don't start squealing too... was *very* annoying.

My noise comes from the rear offside wheel. My car was inspected by a Skoda UK tech the other day for something unrelated to this (driver's seat rocking). Anyhow, in addition to getting the seat rails replaced they are going to attack the squeaking brakes with a VW repair kit. Dunno what it is, but we'll see whether it works or not soon

The squeak on mine has returned with a vengence and it's doing my head in. Has anyone had this fixed and as an extreme measure does fitting the TT/Octavia discs and callipers fix this problem or is it not related to the brakes? Also I seem to have a rattle when I lift off this throttle any ideas?

I had a low whine when slow speed manouvering, especially in reverse, and the dealer fitted some balance weights which seemed to have fixed the problem.

The first time I jet washed mine and left it overnight, I panicked the next morning when the horrible grating noise appeared the first time I braked.

Skoda must use extra special fast rust discs!

had a nasty grinding noise on my vrs after driving up to newcastle from nottingham; long story short Silbury Sokda cleaned the discs/pads and fitted 'vibration plates' this may well be the kit Reffro mentioned. I also had the squeaky low speed noise - hopefully this kit is the fix all;) Good service at Silbury:thumbup:
