vRS Diesel oil usage.

Featured Replies

Has anyone else found the vRS Diesel burns oil when it is new?  Without warning (why would it!!) the oil light came on when I was on a motorway run at 7500 miles from new (oil was checked and full when I got the car).  My last CR TDI never drank oil, my wife’s golf 150 TDi does not drink any oil, it came as quite a shock!!  Pulling in at the next service station I found the oil was off the bottom of the dipstick……. Sadly I did not carry the dealer supplied oil so I had to buy what I could to carry on.  In all it took 1.5Ltr to get it back to hust under full.

After looking around there are a number of Golf GTD owners who have had similar experiences, so be warned, check your oil and keep some oil in the car.  Also remember you should only use the expensive 507.00 approved oil if you are on the long service interval (e.g. Castrol Edge).

My previous passat cr170 tdi used to use a bit of oil... About a litre between 20k services... You could always tell when it was getting low as the engine sound became (even) more clattery.

Thats actually not too bad, if we were talking using a litre of oil in a few hundred miles and not 7.5k Id be concerned but that usage in that amount of mileage is not unheard of and not indicative of a problem.

My Mk6 Golf 2.0 TDI 140 CR used to burn quite a bit of oil when new.....i seem to remember it once expending a litre in only a few thousand miles, i just attributed it to being new and bedding in.

Needless to say once it had a bit more mileage under its belt...hardly used oil and I racked up 50k largely trouble free miles in it, hard ones at that. The car drove pretty well and regularly would see mid high 50 mpg, sometimes into the 60's if driven with restraint. If anything its more efficient than my Mk3 150 TDi Octavia.

I personally would monitor it....Id wager its a one off and will settle down from this point on.

I would add that one of my colleagues had an alfa gulietta 170 tdi and that used a litre every 1000 miles. Despite the alfa manual saying to check the oil every 3k miles (eg it could lose 3 litres of oil between checks), Alfa said this was not abnormal....

I'd be checking the oil a bit more frequently until you know what it consumes! 7500 miles without checking the dipstick seems a bit worrying.

My 63 plate MKIII Tdi CR Vrs uses no oil at all. I've never put any in, even after a service/oil change. 11968 miles on the clock

Our Mk2 PD170 vRS did this once, hadn't seemed to use any oil and then went through an engine full in a few thousand miles and then never used a drop between services for the next 75k

Not sure what's normal but my mk2 tdi CR didn't use a drop in the 2 years I owned it.

I probably should have checked it more often (checked at new and around 3K both just about full), I guess I was sucked into none of my previous had used any so……  I wont be making that mistake again!!  Considering the time I spend filling up the washer bottle it would not be a pain to do!!

Mine doesn't burn any oil - just had first oil change at 9500 miles.

I think there is a general issue with running fully synthetic oil combined with treating them too gently during running in............general advice is drive them hardish from the off.

Mine ('14 VRS TDi) doesn't use any and I check it regularly. Didn't use any while running in either for whatever reason.

Mines a tsi but hasn't used a drop, I'm now at 7500k and its had a service. Even the cheap at the dealership said if it ever needs oil come in and they will top it up for free as they said it they often use quite a lot of oil. I put it down to not being over cautious when running in.

I have the 1.4 TSI and it uses 1 liter every 13000-14000km

I ran in my mk2 cr nice and gently and that never used a drop of oil.....

I'm also trying to run in my new mk3 TSI vRS but I'm finding it very not to give it a little stretch every now and then!!

Mine octy vRS TDI (14 plate) has not used any oil at all I chack it each week and it always in the same place.

It's gested had it first service at 18.172 miles so we will see if it uses some oil now

Mine has used 1 litre in 15,000 miles. I was also suprised when I dipped it (at about 9,000 miles to find how low it was).

Always carry half a litre now in the boot.

Same as Auric Goldfinger, 63 plate vRS, negligible oil usage from new although it's not uncommon for VAG 'Oilers' to use some from new until the engine beds in.

Ours just gave us a free bottle of oil to go with the car, so it's easy to top up if needed.

Good advice but it should also be noted that the VW 507.00 oil is a must on any DPF equipped VAG engine regardless of service intervals.

They gave me a free bottle when I picked the car up as well... But if they want to top it up for free I will keep the oil for emergencies

My brother has a new golf gtd which has been using oil, they told him to bring it in and they will top it up foc

What you also have to remember about oil consumption is that when the level is low, it will be running hotter and therefore you will consume even more as it will be less viscous and therefore more likely to evaporate or be burnt off during the combustion process. It also depends on how you drive; if you like to use the full rev range or drive for long periods at max chat this also will affect oil consumption.

In 20k miles mine has used approx 1.25 Ltrs, but the majority of this was in the first 15k miles with weekly check ups.

If you can't get any oil for free as, of the 6-4-15 Costco's have 4ltr of Castrol Edge for £25.90 incl.

I have an Elegance CR150. Oil usage:

0-30k km: almost 2 litre

30k-60k kms: 1+ litre

60k-65k kms: nothing or not yet noticeable

With sporty driving and a lot of motorway kms.

I always let the engine warm up and cool down.

(My previous Golf mk5 with 105PS PD engine burned 2-3 litres in every 30k kms depending on my foot :D.)

My previous CR150 O3 and this one don't seem to use any oil at all - 33K on the first car and 6K on this one and not had to top up yet.
