Steering sensor fault

Hi,

 

I've finally managed to get vcds-lite to talk to the Mrs' 6Y Fabia, and it's reporting:

 

Address 44: Steering Assist       Labels: 6Q0-423-156.LBL
   Controller: 6Q0 423 156 E
   Component: Lenkhilfe           0001
   Coding: 00110
   Shop #: WSC 00000
1 Fault Found:
00816 - Power Steering Sensor (G250)
            37-10 - Faulty - Intermittent
 
Is it therefore pretty likely that the sensor is at fault? If so, is it easily accessed/replaced?
 
I'm still chasing down the flickering electrics issue, so I'd like to get to the bottom of that before assuming that any other electronics are duff.

Two torx head screws to remove, access from drivers side wheel arch (wheel off), then one very long cable with no joins from sensor along subframe/rack to passenger side then along chassis rail to under battery/screen wash bottle area, keep sensor intact & use for rebate as I got circa £30 for it from the dealers. Clipping the wiring back in place etc is very time consuming & fiddly to get the route correct!!!

 

I have done two of these & a PITA!!!

The flickering is very likely to be caused by the dodgy sensor making the steering pump run when it shouldn't.

Out of interest, is there any reason why one shouldn't cut and join the sensor cable rather than re-routing it, provided it's properly done and waterproofed?

 

Or is it just as easy to do it properly?

Have you had a look yet? Depending on what year the car is, it may be the much easier sensor with connector, rather than sensor with captive cable.

 

Not had chance yet. I'll take a look this weekend :)

Got the sensor changed yesterday (thanks to steveopc for sorting me out with one). Not a bad job at all, really.

 

So far, so good. No sign of the steering fault light, and the electrics seem to be flicker-free. Hopefully that's the end of that particular gremlin!
