help with forge tip fitting pls.

Featured Replies

Hi I'm giving my car some love I've bought a couple of gentle upgrades for it one of them being the forge tip pipe. Now I have a problem and after some advice please. I've got the oem tip off howdy I'm struggling to get off the pipe from the turbo. From my haynes manual it's a mounting bolt holding the last part (air inlet pipe stub) on however I'm struggling to get access from above to it I have long allen keys sockets but they are not sitting in straight I've tried to turn it but got some metal shards so I stopped. I'm at a loss now so I ask your advice please.

Do you mean this allen bolt ? (the one with the small z bracket on, its holding the Forge hose clip in place ).

I hope the swarf your getting is not the thread from the hole in the turbo casting.

If the thread has stripped a heli - coil thread insert or similar can be used to get you out of the s****, access could be a problem tho'.

Yeah that's the one it's a allen head bolt. Its hard to get to from above to get the allen key in straight the head hasn't threaded but if I carried on from that angle it would shred it.

Damn,thats bad news,

Ive been on EKTA, its details are :-

Allen Key head Bolt (M6 x 16mm long)

Part Number.........N - 014 - 7404 (I think any (same size) off the shelf bolt would do if its thread is buggered).

If you can get the bolt out safely, you could run a M6 plug tap down the hole to clear the thread.

I suspect however, that, over the years, the steel thread has bonded to the aluminium thread and its ripping out. If you want to fit the Forge TIP then that tapped hole will be redundant, anyway.

You will only need a hose clip to hold the hose on the turbo inlet stub. (Use a stainless hose clip). I made / fitted the Z clamp just as a precaution as some TIPs have pulled off (I think engine flexing) as that side is suction not pressurised.

NB: Im in Hertfordshire if you need to borrow a M6 tap.

Thank you for the offer I might indeed take you up on that. I was thinking of heating the bolt and then seeing if it'll budge is just the space to work with that's khack. Yeah looking at the forge tpi pipe I've got it's a case of going over the neck once I get rid of this bit of pipe.

Random question have you got a spare vacuum reservoir you'd be willing to part with I broke mine today.

Hi,

Regarding the vacuum reservoir sorry no, there is a 05' mk1 currently being broken if your quick you could be in luck.

When I fitted the Forge TIP i had to trim about 10mm off the end for a better fit and put the car up on ramps to do it, i found access from underneath much more easier.

Fitting a silicone TIP is a sort of rite of passage for vrs owners with lots of swearing and skinned knuckles, good luck!!.

Lol your right my swearing was on overdrive. I got the pipe on took me f'in ages put on my new forge dv and air filter then started it up and I have a engine code pop up the air mass to low.. thought I'd take it for a gentle spin just incase it reset itself it went lovely however something went pop and it runs like a pig now and is quite noisy. I have a horrible feeling the pipe has popped off the god dam turbo as all looks òk visually in the engine bay. I've had enough for today and the little skin I have left on my hands is sore..!!

Vacuum reservoir, is it the one that's perched on top of one the spark plugs? I forget what it does; part of the N249 system? If so, I've got one spare.

That's the one I managed to fix mine today with some super glue but I want to say thank you for the offer it's appreciated if my "bodge" doesn't work i'll get in touch for your spare. Just got to work out what's happened with the car I'll range a look 2mrw underneath and see if the pipe had indeed come off the turbo..!!

Turbo pipe is still on... so I'm confused now it does sound like the turbo is exposed under load and the pick up is slow. In idle when engine revs all good once in gear driving not so good. Any ideas at all? The only error code I'm getting is maf one with orange triangle on perm. It was all good before I put on these pipes and dv.

Pipework to/from intercooler? There's a dodgy clip on the pipe that goes to the pancake pipe in the wheelarch.

Okkk,

The pop sound you heard sounds like a pressurised section (hose parting company with fixing). I would check all pressure hoses post turbo.

There are 2 most likely candidates:-

1/ Where the stainless charge pipe at the back of the engine, close to the bulkhead running right to left,  (looking at the engine from the front), dives down towards the ground behind the front O/S wheel, there is a rubber hose with a steel end that fits inside the above hose. This is held in with a crap spring that latches on 2 ears. This connection is covered with a snap together heat shield, usually if that happens it can force the poppers on the heat shield to unclip. I had this happen to me and it was quite a loud pop then car would not go above 50mph. Make sure the fitment is secure.

2/ The short length of hose that joins the stainless pancake pipe to the intercooler, (this is found inboard of the front offside wheel). The hose clips should be nice and tight.

Oh yes, also check the hose and hose clips from intercooler to throttle body (you can see this from under the bonnet),

1/ from underneath the car, 2/ by taking off side front wheel off.

Good Luck

Well after some time with the car and with your suggestions it was indeed the pipe inside the o/s front wheel that was connected to the pancake so I thank you kindly for your advice. I also found the problem with the maf some "monkeys front" had put the maf into the tip pipe the wrong way round and there was a f'in arrow on the maf to show which way round doh.. A quick swith round and we were error free...!!

I have also fitted the forge 5 piece turbo hose kit however I have a slight issue. I have two pipes left over and much confused as to where they go so I was wondering if you could help please. I will take a picture and upload it in a mo.

Hi,

its nice to hear of a good result, well done. Anyway the above 2 hoses look like :-

The biggest one goes from intercooler exit to throttle body (inlet manifold), I had to shorten this one to get a kink free fitting.

The other one joins the pancake pipe to the intercooler inlet (the one you had come off).

If you look at this post:-  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/320009-what-is-this-pipehose-called/ and at my reply post No:4, i give a break down of where the Forge hoses go.

Good Luck

Thank you you've been super helpful it's really appreciated. I looked at the big pipe for the throttle body and lining it up it did look too long but I will certainly look at cutting it down and swap it over.

Thanks again
