Vrs juddering when idle

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any problems of there vrs juddering when it's idleing. mines would missfire under loads(thought it was from the same problem) so changed the spark plugs it stopped the missfire under loads but still judders when it's idleing it runs ok when driving there's no fault codes coming up anyone came across this before

I have come across it in a fair few Twinchargers.

So what mileage did the spark plugs get changed at,

what were they like,

which one was causing the misfire?

What engine is it CAVE or CTHE?

Has it had a ECU Update by a Skoda Dealership.

What fuel do you run it on, and is it always the same Brand / Octane?

??

What plugs were fitted as replacements, who fitted them, and what were they gapped at?

Mis-fires may not Log,

and even not when you get a EPC light, Exhaust Emission (engine) light or even both.

Mine also suffers with a bit of juddering. Only started few months back (Revs are completly normal). Recently had full service and still the same. I'm yet to replace the plugs so was thinking it could be linked to them. No misfires or anything up to now.

Since the juddering has started, I'm convinced that my exhaust is blowing. Going to get someone to have a look at the exhaust in case this is the problem.

Maybe best to just get the New Spark Plugs in anyway, and see what the ones that come out look like.

How many miles on the car now.?

You might not notice a mis-fire when warmed up and in day to day running,

or get Warning lights until the plug (gap) tip is in a bad way.

Up hill, under load, 2,400 - 3,500 rpm with Super & Turbo and a misfire, hicup, EPC or Engines Exhaust Emission Light.

Goes Out, you try it again, maybe goes out, maybe in Limp mode.

Not worth gambling, if idle is rough, & a ECU update was done, then check the Spark Plugs, and as well to replace.  All 4.

Hi George. I'm just about to hit 29k miles now so I really should get the plugs changed. It's not had a recent ecu update unfortunately. It was serviced at independent garage. Really wanted to take to skoda but couldn't afford it at the time :-(

It's sitting just under 60k it's 2011 spark plugs were changed close to 5k ago I changed all the filters on it incase but was that last Time it was in skods was about 6 months ago it went in for a gearbox recall all the old plugs were ok when they were taken out 90% of the time it's Tesco momentum every once in a wile I put shell standered but only £10 to get home then put momentum in

Mine does this occasionally. I'm sure there was a thread a while back where someone suggested they do this as the ecu is trying to warm up the cat by dropping fuel into it?

Why would the ECU act differently and have some engines juddering and the ones running correctly not.

Call Skoda UK Customer Services and ask if there is a ECU Update available on your car,

because it is not Running as Their Engine Engineers Designed it too,

and you know they had issues, so as a preventative measure you would like them to Update Yours at their expense.

You believe others needed it doing during Services, but there were no Service Campaigns.

My old car started do what you have described after it's plugs were changed by Skoda.

My car changed from the older type plugs ( fitted from new 2010 built CAVE engine) to a 'newer spec' plug, the new plugs seemed to make it judder when cold, but after 30 seconds it disappeared.

it wouldn't always do it either, when the ambient temp was cold, it would, but if the car was sat in the sun on a warm day, it wouldn't.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Exactly.

& when you open the Drivers Door you hear the Fuel Prime.

When you start the car depending on Ambient Temperature it can be cool air in the Air Box, or very hot air.

Also if you Sit and start and it does its thing, goes to 1,100 rpm, drops to 800 rpm in 40 seconds,

then do you blip the throttle, select 'D'  or is it 'R', then 'D'.

Brakes a bit sticky, cold engine etc etc.

It often obvious that if a car was having a sprited drive before being parked & then cooling down it has nice clean spark plugs.

If it did short journeys, maybe not had a bit of a blast for a while, a judder might be there on start up.

1.4 TSI  TFSI Twincharger 132-136 kw Spark Plugs make a world of difference, the Correct Plugs, the Correct Gap and that they have

not oiled or have a carbon build up.

One plug going off causes much of the issues the Twinchargers are reported as having.

Not all Technicians look at all 4 Spark Plugs,. and not all check gaps correctly.

Mine seems to judder very slightly when I start it up, I've only really noticed it more recently but its quite faint so it could have been happening since I got it...

I did have the spark plugs changed recently due one failing on me, the garage said when they took them out they were in quite bad (black) condition, the car had only done 20,000 miles so they thought it was down to high oil usage, but then it passed the oil consumption test so they said it was fine...

It seems to be fine once the engine has warmed up a bit.

I've had this problem majorly but with no fault codes on my cave engine was the manifold pressure sensor didn't show up as a fault until i had my engine replaced and it started to nearly stall on idle and missfire all the time

also my new engine judders on startup for like 40 seconds thats standard not a big issue will post videos of what mine was doing when the MAP sensor was dodgy as it was always idling rough

Maybe not a big issue,  but it is not how it should run, so maybe best get them to get it running properly.

engines are supposed to judder and shake for a short period of time on a cold start up ?

That is just rubbish.

So why do most not, the greatest majority?   How cold are your cold start ups in Oldham.

If your car is not running right, it is wrong. You can convince your self the way a Technician might that they all do that,

but just go try some other car.

Did your new engine get a new ECU along with it, or have they got the most up to date Sofrware / Map on it?

Did you ask them?

I take it that as well as all the other old parts put back on the engine, the Injectors & Coils were as well.

  • 7 months later...

My Fabia VRS Estate has an intermittent (i.e. not every time) lumpy idle. My granddaughter asked "why is the car wobbling granda?". The main dealer changed the plugs and loaded reams of code (he said). Still does it. I don't know what to do/ Any ideas?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

What age is your car? Mileage?

I take it you run on 97 ron fuel or above?

  • 9 months later...

Been looking into this, since I haven't been driving the car for a few months until recently. There seems to be a much rougher idle when the temperature gauge reads between 10 and 19 degrees Celsius. 9.5 no problem; 20 degrees no problem. I've seen the fuel use sitting over 3L/hour momentarily when first starting up when it's 10-19 degrees. Can't think of any good reason why, but it seems this is the case with mine, especially now that winter is in the rear view mirror...

My Polo GTI does the same thing once you have started it up for the first time. It will do the usual of going to 1,100 revs then after half a minute start dropping.

During that time the car judders slightly but can be felt in the cabin.

I had new spark plugs fitted in January, the DENSO ones which were recommended and it has had a oil change in July.

Mine has a judderey start up too but once had some fluid moved around it's smooth. All my cars have done it.
