Stupid design

Featured Replies

I've had my superb for six months now, and I'm really happy with it.

But there are a couple of design issues that are annoyingly stupid.

This is how my rear bumper is looking in the winter. Why did they make it lower closest to the trunk, which means that water and dirt is collected there?

Water is also being accumulated inside the filling cap compartment, because of the bottom is lower inside than at the opening.

My Roomsters bumper gets like that too,it ticks me off when I clean the car,wax it...then forget to lift the tailgate to do that bit.

I love the title of this thread - it's what I do (Design).

The devil is in the details.....totally agree.

Sometimes designers miss the crucial, annoying, day-to-day details that a customer user group would pick up over a few months of genuine daily use.

A company will drive a car through some stupidly hot desert for months to check that the motor stays cool but fail to look at drainage issues at key 'user points'.

Still a great car though.....

Check the drain in the filler flap is not blocked... it sounds like yours is.

If there is a drain it must be. In that case it's less stupid. I noticed there was a lot of water in there when I was washing the car.

Will have to keep an eye out for this when cleaning my own. The above should be an easy fix though!

Eeek! Mine's white too & even in winter, never got like that. A cuppla quid & 5 mins at a jet wash once a week would help prevent the grime build up...

Might help a bit, but Swedish winter roads are covered with a black mix of salt, grime and water which is really hard to wash off without a proper de-greaser. It's also easy to miss this part since it's not visible with the boot closed.

Anyway, I don't see a point with the design, it would have been better if it was flat or sloping outwards so the water would not stay there.

The bumper doesn't sit tight up against the bodywork does it?

My Octavia estate also slopes inwards but the water simply drains down and out in-between the bumper and the car. There is at least a 2mm gap.

Same on my Superb hatchback...

No, but there is a lip on the bumper where it joins the body preventing this.

I always wipe around the boot and inside all the doors when washing the car for this reason.

Mine suffers from the same dirt accumulation on the rear bumper.

As Gizmo says Open the boot and give it a wipe with a soapy sponge every time you wash it. You can hose the soap out with the boot door shut. That's what I do.

Yes, of course I clean it when washing the car, but it's still a stupid design :)

I'm with you josj, nice clean car, and then you open the tailgate and lots of crud, poor design IMHO

Another frustrating 'stupid design' point I have found is the adjustable central storage box/arm rest. When fully extended you can't get to the hand brake properly.

Yes, a very frustrating and common problem and not just on the Superb. Several other cars as well, especially VAG - I remember seeing one in an Audi A3 being particularly intrusive.
