Smf vs dmf opinions for 2 year car

Featured Replies

We need to keep the octavia until my wife finishes her teacher training so around eighteen to twenty four months. It had a clutch last year according to history but the throw out bearing is Naffed and dmf is showing obvious vibration when pulling away. Also a real jerk between first and second and second and third which I think may be the throw out bearing. So end of the month it's new clutch kit and flywheel but which to go for. Ideally don't want to spend unnecessarily, as I said it needs to last 2 years then we will go back on finance for a nice fl vrs Estate. I'm not sure places like Mr clutch will fit smf and don't fancy main dealer prices on a 2006 car. Opinions as always appreciated

Mileage is another worry as on 160k, bit concerned about the extra strain on the bottom end if any.

You don't need an smf setup on an unmodified octavia. Standard setup is fine when driven under normal conditions with mechanical sympathy.

Dmf should last years, provided it is not labouring with a car in too high a gear for the conditions, on a regular basis.

I'd hope they would both last over 2 years as I don't abuse the car or anything. I was thinking the smf may be the cheaper route but don't know.

The way a view it, if the car was meant to have a SMF, I would have left the factory with one. DMF for me!

Where did you get yours done Mike if you don't mind me asking

I had a smf fitted to my vrs and I got it taken out.. The noise was terrible my cr sounded like a tractor when at low rpm or when slowing down to pull in somewhere

If it had a new clutch last year, is there any need to replace this.

I ask this as I had the DMF replaced (with new DMF & Bolts) when I purchased my car a few years ago, but did not have the clutches (DSG) replaced as the new DMF was agreed work and paid for by the supplying garage, with a few quid from me to ensure the job was completed at a Skoda independent (rather than his mate next door, LOL) The receipt was circa £1100.

Personally (in your circumstances) I would fit a DMF, and I have had no problems with mine since, but I know a lot of people on here will recommend the SMF conversion.

I have seen both kits on ebay, reasonably priced for both really. the problem is i want the garage to source the parts as then if they go wrong its their issue rather than them say the parts I supplied failed. I won't be able to afford to do this twice so opinions on the best place to get it done are welcomed.

I guess not many people on here will be familiar with your area.

A local independent VAG specialist would be my choice, if my usual service & mot garage were not happy to do it. If you have one you trust, sound them out and see if they have done one before maybe.

I read that it was very important to use new bolts (6) also. Make sure the garage is aware of this.

I'm phoning around for prices now, probably going to go to Mr clutch or the likes.

From what I have heard of them and the likes, although it is only hearsay on my behalf, I would not even consider them.

I supplied a clutch to a similar place (for them to fit after a ford mechanic colleague let me down) and I swear they just kept the part and told me that they had fitted it. Unfortunately I had no way of proving it.

Without that, I still wouldn't consider them. Just my opinion though.

They come back with £679 all in for clutch release bearing and dmf. I'm not overly upset by that and as the release bearing and flywheel are shot they would have to replace them. The clutch however is fairly new so I suppose they could blag that.

Indy Seat Skoda specialist have quoted £628.80 inc Vat

That is very expensive.

My local indi fitted my clutch and DMF for £140 labour on my 1.9 Fabia.

I sourced the parts myself from carparts4less.

At those prices, it would be cheaper to drive to Lincoln for the day.

Damn, I am useless at this haggling malarky. I asked could they do it less and they said no...I said Ok :/ What should I be looking at all in from a reputable place?

I presume, could be wrong though, there is a good difference work wise, between the Octavia and the Fabia.

I'm sure when I checked prices at the time of early 2011 the price I was billed seemed fairly reasonable. I wasn't paying anyway.

So the prices seem pretty good to me at the seat indy.

I would wait until at least tonight before committing, as you will probably receive more replies and get a lot more useful information.

Good luck.

Plus, I think if you ask them to do it for less than they quoted, you are asking for them to cut corners, kind of. Just my opinion.

Ask them nicely, to match another cheaper quote by all means.

If anything, it should be easier on an Octavia as there is more room :)

As Mike says, the 5 speed on the 1.9 is suitable for conversion to SMF.

I wouldn't bother on a 6 speed though as it will shake, rattle and roll all the way until you remove it :)

I have a five speed so thats all good, I am more than happy with the SMF conversion as I would like the car to go to my daughter when we upgrade but finding a place to fit it seems to be the problem as I want a guarantee on the work really. Even if only 12 months.

I guess mine is different as is DSG 6 speed. You should get a warranty from the independent, but I see your bugbear on price though.

Back again and confused, I can find the SMF kits but I can't find any that specifically state they are valeo parts: http://www.eurocarparts.com/solid-flywheel-conversion-kit

Not even sure these are complete kits, I have found someone to fit just need to get the correct parts now.

Try putting your vehicle details in !

Valeo £340.14 or £225.60 or £426, I suppose depending on your vehicle.
