Possible track toy?

Featured Replies

I Have just acquired for the grand sum of 'free' my friends old Y reg Toyota Corolla 1.6 VVti SR.

Its going to be sorn off road garaged as I have no use for it as a daily driver seeing as I already have 2 Octavia VRS.

The question is has anyone had any experience of these and can you give your views if its worth using as

a weekend track toy. (Its same shape as one below infact its same colour)

Also if anyone has any tips on what's involved in track days then please give advice on

whats required and best practice. I have driven most of the tracks in the uk and

nurburgring etc. However this was decades ago where cost was less prohibitive and

safety not as stringent.

Rip out all unnecessary interior and ring the engine's neck for as much power as possible! Part worn tyres on front to save destroying a new pair of boots :)

I wish I had a garage to tinker and project a car, as well as the requirements to afford to insure a second car for 'weekend' and track days :(

For free - I think it would be rude not to have a play and see how it compares to other cars you've driven on a track. As long as it runs that is?

This was my thought when he said he would scrap it. It won't be anywhere near as focused as my previous cars - Clio 1.8 16v, Clio Williams and Clio 172. They were pretty much like go-carts. However I was using these as daily drivers so had to be a bit more cautious. (Although after about 10mins caution was usually thrown to the wind). So im hoping that by ripping most of the seats and unnecessary weight from the vehicle it will offset the weight of a roll cage and then I can really give it some. I just don't know if the engine will give enough poke to make it entertaining enough even when the weight is stripped. Its pointless spending much money on it probably just do the brakes and suspension.

My dream track/weekend car is a clio cup, the 2.0 16v. And you've had three of them (near enough) !!

Brakes and suspension on a budget would be adequate you'd of thought. It starts getting expensive very quickly I imagine doesn't it? Sorting and modifying a car for the track?

Well technically I had 5 of them I had 1 Williams 2 x Valver's and 2 x 172. and yes they are very good at making screechy noises on tarmac ;-) Suprisingly the older ones I preferred the 172 were quicker but didn't give the same feel.

I was hoping I can blag the cage my mate welds ally tube for a living and I will just wait for bargains on ebay / eurocarparts for the brakes and suspension as there is no rush.

How much do track days cost these days? The nurburgring was 14 euro last time I went and the uk tracks I went with club so got discount. Whats the insurance cost and what's the safety requirements anyone?

Have just found out the 1.6 vvti engine in it only gives 109bhp which is a bit lame seeing as the 20 year old Clio 1.8 16v did 137bhp.

Wont be setting any lap records I don't think, still for free it should be a bit of fun.

To be brutally honest, I'd probably see what you can sell it for. Then put the money into something that is more suited. An older Clio perhaps, as mentioned.

Yeah already come to that conclusion wardy. Its going up for sale just need to renew my Briskoda membership as its expired.

Best of luck. AutoTrader might be your best bet though, at the likely price point. No harm sticking it up here as well though
