Help with instrument coding required.

Featured Replies

I've been trying to deactivate the brake pad wear indicator warning (new pads dont have wire).

I've found the instructions on the Ross Tech website but I'm a little confussed.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/vwmkIV.html

states

Recode for warning lamps:

[select]

[17 - Instruments]

[Recode - 07]

Write down the existing coding for future reference.

Enter 5-digit code from below

[Do It!]

Look at the first two digits in the coding. Add the values for the options together to get the correct coding.

00 - No available equipment

+01 - Brakepad wear sensor warning active

+02 - Seatbelt warning active

+04 - Washer fluid level warning active

Look at the third digit in the coding (Market version):

1 - "EU" 24 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)

2 - "USA" 12 hour clock

3 - "Canada" 12 hour clock (may result in odometer in km in 2002+ clusters)

"The third digit in the code is the country code. The codes are:

4 - "UK" 24 hour clock (should result in odometer in miles)

5 - Japan

6 - Saudi Arabia

7 - Australia

Look at the fourth digit in the coding (Cylinders):

3 - No Service Interval (2002+ models)

4 - 4-cylinder (1999-2001 models)

6 - 6-cylinder (1999-2001 models)

Look at the fifth digit in the coding (Distance impulse multiplier):

2 - 3538

4 - 3648 (some 2002+ models)

So, if you want to have Seatbelt warning and washer fluid warning only in a 2001 Canadian 6-cylinder vehicle, (add 00+02+04 = 06),3,6,2 = 06362.

I'm confussed on 2 issues.

Firstly, when I choose to recode the instruments it gives me 2 codes not just one.... so which is the one I need to change?

Secondly, neither of the 2 codes are what I expect them to be.

I have 23412 and 31480. Neither of these ties in with the coding given on the Ross-Tech site.

Before going to recode the soft coding is shown in a box in the top half on the main screen for the instruments module of the 2 you've posted I think it's 23412. For some reason Skoda clusters are different to VW in that they are coded for sat nav (+16) despite not having the capability to display sat nav. Anyway all you need to do is deduct the number for the option you want to remove e.g. -01. I think 23 is 16(satnav) + 01(Brakepad wear sensor warning active) + 02(Seatbelt warning active) + 04(Washer fluid level warning active) = 23.

so try 22, if that doesn't work try 06 and if that doesn't do it you'll have to change back to 23 and live with it.

All my notes on instrument clusters are at home so if you aren't sorted by tonight I'll have a look and try to help further.

It would make sense for my current code to be 23412.

I was expecting 07412 but if I subtract 16 (SatNav) from 23 I get the 7 I am after.

So, I'll try recoding to 22412

Here is a copy of the updated info for the instruments which is a decode by babelfish from german.

I would agree with the 22412 from the info

Hope it helps

Right, I've removed the brake pad wear indicator.

While there I thouht I'd remove the annoying seat belt warning. The light is now off but the chime is still there! - any ideas?

Just unplug the connector on the seat.

I assume it is easy to identify? I dont want to disconnect the airbag wiring.

It has 2 wires and is a fairly small plug. The other end can be seen going to the seatbelt connector. It's pretty obvious when you look.

When you fitted new pads why not just short brake wear indicator wires together....no lights.

Just a thought.

Well, at the time I planned to connect the wires, they're currently cable tied in place next to each other.

With an MOT in its way I wanted to switch off the light in case the tester had a problem with it being on.

VAG-COM doesnt involve getting dirty hands while removing the wheel ;)
