France Road Trip

Hi all,

We've just got back today from a Driving holiday in France with our 2014 Octavia Estate SE 1.6TDI.

The Car was superb from start to finish. We travelled 1,379 miles at an average speed of 44MPH and overall we got an astonishing 61.5MPG.

Good going. Out of interest, how many miles were on the car when you set off?

Indeed, the Octavia is a great mile muncher.

Having done similar trips around Europe its very comforatable particularly for long journeys on the highway.

The Car had appox 10k on the clock.

We've had it from new and it only felt fully run in from the 8,500 mile mark.

Wow impressive , was that fill to fill or mfd ?

Using the MFD

Where did you go to cover that mileage in France alone?

We easily cover those distances when we go to France in the summer , there/back and day trips etc , soon mounts up .

Last year in France my mapped 170 Superb recorded 62mpg on the mfd , never bettered 49mpg actual fill to fill though

Fatbelly33, Do you pre pay for tolls or do you pay as you go? I have been recommended Sanef Tolling, get account and use the drive through option.  I am of to the South of France this summer and would appreciate thoughts on it.

I too am driving through France in a couple of weeks time and would appreciate any tips on what I need to take, best way to tackle toll roads etc...

A friend of mine signed up for the Automatic Payment system - I don't know the ful ins and outs but he said it saved him a lot of queing, stopping and overall time on his journey South.

You can also use the above website to estimate the toll costs for your journey.

EDIT:

Actually try this link for UK toll payment customers:

https://www.saneftolling.co.uk/

I went last August in mine and covered 2,500 miles but that was through a few European countries. I think the MPG was high 50s from memory.

Highly recommend the Sanef toll tag. There were horendous queues at a few tolls but with the Tag you nearly always get a seperate lane (which was always empty) and you can drive through the toll at 30mph without stopping. It is more expensive as you use the exchange rate they set is worse than you can get changing cash up and there is a couple of fees to pay but you save a huge amount of time.

Stuck mine here and no problems.89e2a6ab905a03c588080754a16bf6f4.jpg

If you are using the tunnel to cross look at their offers. You save the application fee and the annual fee is halved after the first year. The tag is well worth having if you are going to the south.

Thanks for the heads up - already booked the Ferry sadly.

This year sees my 2nd round trip to Cannes. Last year was excellent in our VRS. It just eats up the miles. ACC really comes into its own on such a long drive. I even turned on Lane Assist.

Quite surprising to see no French vRS' on the roads there......or any Skoda really.

Just lots of Citroens, Peugeots and Renaults :-)

Wondered if this was of any interest to any of you.

We took our 10 month old Octavia Elegance 2.0 TDI CR 150 PS towing our 1.2 tonne caravan to the far SW of France.  Had absolutely no problems and the car cruised easily within legal limits with cruise control mostly in 6th gear returning an amazing 36 mpg over a total distance of nearly 2k.  Yes you need to 'read-the-road' and anticipate chaning down earlier but not a problem.  It towed the 'van without a care.  We avoided tolls using other main roads without problem.  The car certainly met it's 'Tow Car of the Year Award' our reason for selecting it.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I will definately be getting pre paid tolls for my summer trip south.
