A question about sealing alloy wheels...

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Very close to purchasing a different set of alloy wheels for Bismark, the ones I think I may go for are finished not in a glossy or lacquer coat but in a semi matt / satin finish.

Once the tyres are on and before I fit them to the car, I would like give them a good coat of sealer but am uncertain which to use on such a finish.

Any ideas?

Loads to choose from, FK1000p is great, big tub & bonus is you can use it on the car.

Cheers, you mentioned it in one of my other threads but wanted to be certain.

Thank you.

There are quite a few to choose, FK is very versatile, if you were nearer I'd give you a sample so you could try it.

I've used sonax wheel sealant recently, I'm impressed so far, cheap and will do many applications.

Whilst I've not used it I have seen it's ability in the flesh so to speak, gtechniq's C5 is a good long term product.

Saying that I can't knock FK1000p having used this on paintwork.

Thanks guys but am I right in saying it gives a gloss finish?

The wheels as mentioned are a satin finish and I don't want to lose that appearance because of the sealer?

C5 certainly wont alter the finish on satin, it can darken the colour a little, black becomes blacker as such.

Both my sets of wheels are standard silver and anthracite with standard finish as such and the sonax I have used recently has not changed their appearance.

Ok, that's handy, thank you.

I'm waiting to see if I carpro hydro2 works well on my wheels.  I will be treating them with the wheels removed though.

I use auto finesse mint rims, it's a wax but it lasts a long time and all you need is a hose down every week to keep them looking great.

Do you want a month or two durability, or up to 2 years?

Err, I just want to make the easier to clean, I guess a month or two would be fine.

Ok....regular application will result in protection and ease of cleaning for most dedicated alloy sealants and wheel waxes whichever you decide to go for

Ok, thank you.

Youre welcome

I notice no one has mentioned Poorboys.  Any reason?  I have used it on my newly powder coated wheels and put on three coats followed by BSD and was wondering how often I will have to reapply the Poorboys and how long I can get away with normal cleaning and BSD.

The BSD will prolong the durability Chris

However.....TBH...BSD is so good I would ditch the Poorboys and just use that

Now you tell me Chris.  So I wasted five hours of my life putting three coats on then?  Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!

Poorboys is good, 3 coats should last a while, I was doing 20k miles a year when I used it & I topped it up every 10 weeks or so, I love the smell of it also & IMO it's great value.

Not used BSD on wheels, not a fan of it, but that's just my opinion.

Not at all..LOL

Its protection ...so it will help a lot

BSD will do all that the Poorboys will do on its own, thats all

Using both is fine, but not strictly necessary

Good morning Chris.  Still think how much time I would have saved had I just used the BSD.  How much back ache I could have saved.  Still it is good to know that I can use BSD in the future...............AND WILL!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I love it and will always recommend it

Its the best Spray and Wipe sealer I know

It really is a no brainer for me

It can go under or over waxes and also be used as astand alone sealer

Its very versatile too..Can be used as a drying aid and watered down by 20% to make it go further...works well too

Its beading ability is awesome, so its really easy to tell when it needs topping up again

That pretty much covers it all. Some find it a little grabby but I really don't notice it too much.

Like Chris said probably the best all round product available.
