anyone know anything about bike cleaning stuff?

Featured Replies

hi all

hopefully not too off piste for this board, but here goes.

bought some muc off "all over bike cleaner" in one of the aldi specials. Was curious if people have ever used it on bike or car, I'm curious to know whether it is similar to a citrus type prewash or whether there are any big differences. It does claim Nano Tech to penetrate the dirt, which sounds fancy if nothing else.

And onto a wider issue, any reason not too replace this with something like BH autofoam from a spray bottle on a pushbike?

Simon

Knowing how I am into car detailing now, I would probably attempt to snow foam my bike after a muddy ride first :D

Muck off is developed not to harm bike components , and also remove oil etc , snow foam unless ph neutral will harm it

haha, well its a road bike, so if i've gotten it really muddy i'd have gone badly wrong somewhere.

Thanks for the guidance.  Any ideas whether BH autofoam, or magifoam for that matter are ph neutral?

I used muckoff when I first got a MTB but now use powermaxed tfr as it's good stuff and loads cheaper. I clean my drivechain compenents with jizer and take my chain off and soak that too before applying a good quality chain lube. I've been using 2 chains alternatively to help prevent sprocket wear caused by chain wear/stretching and some GT85 on the sprockets and cables after

i was thinking of getting some of that for next winter, so may push the buy forward (especially if an offer were to come up).  Wayne if you are watching...... :)

how does two chains help, wont you just end up with two worn chains, or am I missing the point?

Yes you do...both the chain and sprockets wear as the chain stretches but the sprockets, especially the ones you use the most off road where most dust and dirt gets on to them wear quickest so in the end the sprockets get to the point where you can't fit a new chain because the new one will jump on the worn teeth so if you use 2 chains this reduces chain stretch as you're using 2 rather than 1 so you prolong the life of the sprockets which are more expensive than the chains if that makes sense? Well that's my take on things!

My cassette is 75 pounds and chain 50 pounds and replace them both at the same time, I have hope sprockets , its not a mountain bike but used all year round 12,000 miles a year and would not advise using 2 chains as the marry up to the cassette so could slip , I use gt85 every ride as well, but salt will destroy your inner cables and chain no matter how much lube/grease protection you have so always replace in April, ( did last week) Many Traffic film removers have to high a concentration of chemicals and may be cheap but be careful . Muck off if sourced right is not that expensive here http://www.racshop.co.uk/car-cleaning/muc-off-bike-car-motorbike-cleaning/muc-off-bike-cleaning/product/muc-off-nano-tech-bike-cleaner-1-litre.html?gclid=CLCe0fXvi8UCFVTKtAodhXwADA

and here only 18 pounds for 5 litre http://www.wiggle.co.uk/muc-off-nano-tech-bike-cleaner-5-litre/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&kpid=5300006712&sku=5300006712&ci_src=18615224&ci_sku=5300006712uk&utm_source=google&utm_term&utm_campaign=Accessories&utm_medium=base&utm_content=sFHGrWRGP_dc%7cpcrid%7c%7cpkw%7c%7cpmt%7c%7cprd%7c5300006712uk

The Poundland shop in Rotherham has a range of Muc Off sprays at the minute, would you believe they are only a pound :giggle:

Ta for the heads up.

That is a good deal, just bought 2 x litre bottles for £10 at Halfords and thought that was good

Three for two at Halfords Alan, at the moment...Does it not apply to MucOff?

Muc off is bike cleaning, not car detailing so no.

Last time they did that it was on 'Cleaning Products'

Walked through the one in Rotherham a few hours ago & they had 6 on the shelf, was tempted to buy them & sell them on to you guys. But I suspect that would have been classed as trading or similar :(

it would not the full retail price is 9 pounds but usually for sale at £7.49 as was this case or two for ten pound in a section all by their self . Same with muc off motorcycle wax is not included as classed as bike not car , also 2x 7.49 is more than 10 pounds

Walked through again earlier today & all gone :(

Mucoff is alkali.  It is, or was, sold as a car wheel cleaner as well as bike cleaner but don't leave it on long and be sure to wash off thoroughly (on bike and car) or it damages most finishes.  I'd not use it on paint at all.

How strong an alkali is it? What would you be using instead? Any recommendations?

Its not super strong, so its safe if used properly ie thoroughly washed off.  However I know hundreds of mtbers that have had a washing routine 1. Spray muc off liberally over bike 2. Leave for 5 minutes, 3 through bucket of water over bike.  Over time bikes suffered, anodising got stripped mainly.   It is fine though as a pretty wash dirt loosener, so long as you thoroughly wash it off.

I just use a bucket of water and car shampoo

Im sure that if there were any issues with MucOff, Alan would have said so by now

Ive used it on my car with no problems at all...but not on a bike
