URGENT top mount help

Featured Replies

Fitted coilovers last week, including new top mounts and top mount bearings. it seem to drive ok but still had a 'CLUNK' when braking in reverse, I thought this was originally due to top mounts but as the noise was still there I decided to poly bush the front arms.

it has seemed to cure the clunk from drivers side but passanger side still does it. ive had another look and now seems the ball joint is on its way out!

also thought id double check the top mounts fount what appears to be splits or weak spots

passanger side

drivers side

heres a video of the drivers side whiles slight turning the wheel sidr to side, appear the mount is allowing the stut to move side ways!

does anybody know if this is correct as it doesnt seem right to me, dont think itll be long before the mount sheers in half!

Err mk1 octavia right?? Where's the rest of the bits?

no sorry its a bora, same setup though, ive removed the top cap for inspection

Yes same setup, there should be a concave washer and another nut on top of there before the rubber cap goes on.

give them a few days to settle in, then retighten the nuts.

its on coilovers, so in order from bottom to top is spring, spring top cap, top mount bearing, top mount, top mount securing nut ( which is seen in pic), top cap and finally top cap securing nut which are bother removed for inspection as said

Have you seen the video? im sure the strut shouldnt nove that much within the top mount

There should be a spacer between the coilover spring top cap and the bearing. It's about 20mm long if I recall

I didnt get any spacer in the kit! the coil overs were already asdembled as shown in pic below, just needed to remove the nuts to fit the bearing and topmount!

def not got that, sure they usually come with fk ak coilovers?

Sometimes they do with fk stuff but not always, those look like the ak fixed damping rate type, just use the ones that are on your original suspension legs if they aren't it the kit

There isnt any on the original suspension either, theres the spring, then the spring top plate then the bearing then the top mount

Ive replaced the top mounts today with KYB one from local factors, £10 each and the osf ball joint £15. didnt have to remove strut, just undone from above then when raised the car, the strut lowers enough to remove the top mount and bearing. ive used the new nuts which came with the fk coilover kit, things seem to sit much better. ive rang around a few fk dealers today and ive been told theres not a spacer as suggested. Ive also shortend the drop links in hope they no longer catch the driveshaft
