JUST WHEN EVERYTHING IS GOING SO WELL....

Featured Replies

disaster suddenly strikes. No prior warning, engine management light comes on & car starts running as rough as as a bears arse. Switch off, remove key, leave it a few minutes & try again. Car starts OK , sounds rough, engine management light still on. It sounds as if it is still running on all 4, but no power & sounds different.

What do you reckon gentlemen?

Obviously I will have to call Skoda assist, but has anybody any thoughts?  Plugs were changed last week as per Georges recommendation.

Just to recap it's the engine management light that is on, not the EPC one. All advice welcome.

Sorry to hear this, doesn't sound great! mis-firing?

How old is the car Derek and is it still in warranty? Are you still running the bluespark tuning box?

Hi Tom

Car is just 2 years old & has covered 17000 miles. Stiil 12 months warranty left. Bluespark box was removed a couple of months ago prior to its service, & hasn't been refitted. It doesn't appear to be misfiring, or running on 3 cylinders, but it does sound a bit lumpy. I presume the ECU has shut down the turbo & supercharger which might account for the different sounding engine.

That's really filled me with confidence!!! Thanks a bundle.

I wouldn't worry too much seen as it's still under warranty :-)

Sorry to hear this.

So did you check the Plug Gaps when they were being fitted?

If the Plugs are OK & the Coils are all fine, then its going to down to what Error Codes show if any.

Hopefully just in LImp Mode and shut down 2 Cylinders and disabled the Turbo.

What Air Filter is in, a standard one?

Hi George

Just as I was getting ready to show all you young whippersnappers how it's done at the Pod!!

Plugs were only fitted last week by a highly respected independent VAG garage. Plug gap was set at 0.8mm. Airfilter is standard & has never been changed. Waiting for Skoda assist - coming at 20.00-20.30 hrs.

Fingers crossed!

Good luck

Hope you get this sorted matey! Need you at the 'pod :-)

Not all bad news.............. Skoda Assist have been & gone.

Apparently his diagnostic check showed low fuel pressure at the injector rail. He cleared the fault codes, & the car seems to be running OK.  He reckons it's probably the high pressure fuel pump playing up & suggests I take it back from whence it came. Will do first thing Monday.

Maybe I'll make it too the Pod after all.

Thanks to all for your advice.  Good to know there are people out there who care.

Where you at high revs when it went wrong? mine (old one) did a similar thing. Reset the codes and it never did it again. Simpsons couldnt find anything either.

yep! I had recently had the RARB fitted & I was giving it big licks around the back lanes of Kirkham. All seems well today though - touch wood.

I would not be too concerned at high RPM on Turbo.

But,

Pay attention to on Supercharger & Turbo when booting it between 2,400 & 3,500 RPM,

maybe full beans on Kick Down, or Manual Selection and dropping it into 3rd, and engine under load, climbing hard uphill.

Just watch for a flash from the EPC Light or Exhaust Control, or both, and if you do ever, back off, do not let it go into Limp Mode.

Stop, & then see how you get on once restarted, dont just try booting it hard again without stopping.

Was there anything different yesterday,  car sitting ticking over while stopped, very warm,  new fuel in or the likes.?

Hopefully just a Glitch and no more.

(i would stay away from fitting the tuning box.)

I was driving in manual mode when the problem occurred (red lining in 3rd). The engine faltered & the EPC light flashed & went out. I continued on & the same thing happened, only this time the engine management light (the one shaped like an engine block) came on & stopped on & the engine just sounded different & was well down on power. I presume that is limp mode?

It got me home ok (only a couple of miles) & I called Skoda assist. He was a nice enough guy but I didn't really think he knew much about the twincharger engine - he didn't seem to know it was supercharged?

Anyway his diagnostic check showed low fuel pressure at the fuel injectors.

It seems OK today, but would you recommend taking it to the main dealers for a check up? He says he cleared the fault log so surely nothing will show up when the main dealer checks with VCDS?

It seems wise to leave off the Bluespark box (for now anyway) Shame really that was my secret weapon for the Pod.

Id nip it into Simpsons. The service manager their Simon is brilliant. So are his two receptionists, Darcy and Charlotte. (They made an impression). He knows a lot about what engines he deals with and has won skoda awards for his skills. There is a master tech there that is very clued up on the twincharger aswell.

The EPC light can mean the Engine Management selects a Emergency Programme to allow you to continue to a Garage.

The Engine Light, 'Warning' 'Control System for the exhaust' also can select an Emergency Programme.

allowing to you drive carefully to a Garage.

So maybe they will pick up on a Sensor at fault, or a fuel pump problem,

but hopefully that is it,

Summer Fuel in, new plugs, ECU all reset nicely.

Ask though if there is a Software Update for the ECU, and can they be sure the car is running this now.

At Skoda's expense, not yours.

See you at Santa Pod, and Th3Grinch i hope.

I am off on holiday now.

Darcy and Charlotte. There's 2 names to conjure with! Which one is the tall sultry one with glasses? I know Simon of course & I don't think he's too impressed with my mods - the crunch will come if I ever need any warranty work doing.

All my "unofficial" work has been done by Volkservice on Clifton Rd. What a couple of brilliant guys are Mike & Jared. Nothing is too much trouble they really do go the extra mile.

Anyway thanks for the info & I hope you make it to the Pod.

Thanks for the advice George. Enjoy your holliers.

vRSforever.

When i am at Preston North Ibis,

do i need to drive towards Blackpool to get Momentum at Tesco, ?

i will probably head that way anyway as long as they have 99.  So just checking.

George theres a tesco momentum station at the edge of Blackpool. That is the only one in Blackpool that is simple and also the one I use as the flow is faster. . VrsForever lives a bit further over than me so will maybe get his from preston area.

What night are you staying at Preston? The night before? Or are you making 2 stops on way down ? Think you said your back doesnt let you do too much at a time.

Going Yorkshire Dales, and maybe Peak District and then am booked Preston Thursday night. So just tripping about for a while and drinking bitter, so no back issues.
