In car SAT NAV advice

Featured Replies

I'm looking at investing in an in car sat nav for my skoda fabia mk 2. Could anyone advise a decent model and a company to fit it in the NW. As I cannot afford the £1100 skoda want.

I presume you mean a new headunit?

What is the budget?

What have skoda quoted for? Columbus?

Kenwood do a really good one, but its roughly £800

they have quoted £1100 for the kenwood, haven't mentioned any other options. Have had an offer of £400 for an android one but unsure of the quality of them.

As above.

Need to know what your budget is.

You can pick them up from ebay for much less than £1,100!

They are a doddle to fit yourself.

Your options are an Amundsen+ (RNS 315):

Or a Columbus (RNS 510):

I would avoid the cheap (although not cheap at £400!!!) Android units.

If you just want a simple sat-nav that works then get a proper Skoda one.

Sorry to hijack slightly, but does the amundsen+ have bluetooth built in? I have a unit in mine but not sure if its amundsen or amundsen+ it looks the same as above? Just as I cant get my bluetooth to work, even though im told that its 'bluetooth prepared' whatever that means. They said I need a parrot system to link it to satnav unit. That doesnt make much sense to me.

Some have Bluetooth built in and others don't.

The only way to tell would either to activate with VCDS and if no errors are returned you have it or to remove the headunit and check for a sticker with a MAC address on with a load of numbers and letter- if it's all zeros then no Bluetooth.

ideally don't want to spend more than £500-£600.

Both the Amundsen+ and Columbus can be bought for well under that then.

Both will require a GPS antenna and single to double FM adapter (ebay).

The Amundsen maps can only be updated with a proper (expensive) SD card. The Columbus is easily updated with a disc (I shall leave you to google what I mean).

Both will display nav instructions on maxidot if fitted.

You will also need a new trim to go round depending on what stereo is fitted at the moment.

Sounds like the columbus is the way forward.

Cheers.

Have you considered TomTom or Garmin dedicated SatNavs? Some of them are VERY useful, regular updates are available and you should be able to get a decent unit with live traffic alerts for a whole lot less than £1,100

I recently upgraded my swing radio to a GPS headunit. I ended up buying a RNS315 on ebay complete with microphone, cable and GPS antenna for 285 quid, if you wait you'll drop on one, i'd been looking for 6 weeks constantly as new ones were put on before i landed on mine (ive seen plenty for around 400)

The only downside to mine is it shows welcome to volkswagen when you turn it on and the backlight to the buttons is red, but i can live this small issue :)

Fitting it was way easier than i thought it would be, just be careful with the interior light (i managed to break mine removing the glass cover ended up costing 20 quid to replace the whole unit)

I kept my swing to put back in the car if i ever change it in the future, means ill be able to put the sat nav into almost any vw group car i buy in the future or resell it.

Currently watching a few on eBay now. Could prob pick one up for around 250 (rns315) at the mo but waiting to see if can get a bargain!

Am I right in thinking the rns310 isn't Bluetooth? I need to be able to stream spotify through Bluetooth!

Hi, I own a fabia 5j 2009 model, I am wondering to change my dance head unit to a Colombus, mine is fitted with maxidot and steering control and pdc as well does it fit straight away or it may cause any problems? Does the display of the pdc still appear on the colombus, the steering controls is compatible and the maxidot still gives info from the colombus?

It'll fit but it'll need coding to make sure all the functions work. Nothing scary though and I've done a few.

The RNS315 with Bluetooth fitted streams Spotify perfectly and displays track name on head unit and maxi dot. Plus you can change track using radio / control stalk

i retro fitted 315 dab and Bluetooth into my Fabia 2010 within 15 mins. Super easy!

I use a garmin satnav with free lifetime upgrades, one advantage with this is that it sits up on top of the dash (bean bag mount) and I can see it without taking eyes off road, the inbuilt satnavs tend to be mounted fairly low (and as vxh posted - they are cheap : ))

The sat nav directions get sent to the Maxi Dot too so you dont have to look at the unit all the time

Fair comment -

My garmin also has traffic info and I also tend to use it as a 'moving map' if navigating through a strange city etc,I can then see the route ahead and the  road names we are approaching, lane assist is also useful in strange cities etc.

Having said all that I ignore it a lot  and normally use it as a guide,I follow its instructions when in unfamiliar towns/cities etc but elsewhere it is just useful for ETA,speed info and traffic info. Also useful if I have been distracted on Mways and do not realise we are approaching our exit :)
