Variable Servicing

Featured Replies

I know there are a number of factors that will affect the service date on variable servicing but is a mid service period oil change likely to increase the mileage to next service?

It does not monitor the grade of the oil so it will not change the time or mileage for the next service. It is how you treat the car that is monitored.

Thanks - just wondered what factors were involved

According to VW the engine does monitor the oil quality with built in sensors. I've heard of people who have topped up with the incorrect oil and the service light has come on much sooner than it should have done had the correct oil been used.

LongLife Service regimes

The LongLife Service regime is so called because there are no set service intervals and, depending on how you drive your vehicle, and the conditions of use, a service will be required anywhere between 9,000 miles or 12 months (whichever occurs first), up to a maximum of 20,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first).

This LongLife service regime has been made possible due to the development of new Volkswagen engines with the latest technically advanced LongLife oil. These engines use built-in sensors that continually monitor the oil quality, making it possible to enjoy reliable and confident motoring for up to a maximum of 20,000* miles or 24 months (whichever occurs first).

*Please consult your Volkswagen Retailer or repairer for full information.

I am on variable servicing and DIY changed my oil/filter 9,000 miles after its first service and it still showed 10,000 miles/365 days till the next service.

I am not entirely sure myself what it monitors...

Well you learn something every day. I knew they monitored all aspect but did not realise that the technology went that far even in modern engines.

I very just had Inspection Now! Come up each time I turn on.

Did not think it was service related but apparently it is.

I have long life oil and it was serviced in September at 10 k miles.

It is now 19k miles.

Service booked for Wednesday.

A further restriction on owners? how do we know which is the right oil, just Skoda's own? Castrol website says Edge professional

It needs to meet VAG spec 504.00 for petrol and 507.00 for diesel engines.

Was it reset on variable though? Could have been changed to fixed interval.

A 10,000 mile / 365 day (12 months) service interval is fixed, not variable.

On fixed the oil quality is not monitored.

TPS says...

Capacity : Capacity 4.3 liter   Use : Normal Intervals : Change 15000 km / 12 months Products : QUANTUM Longlife III 5W-30   : EDGE 5W-30   Use : Flexible (max) Intervals : Change 30000 km / 24 months Products : QUANTUM Longlife III 5W-30   : EDGE 5W-30

how do you know if a car is on fixed or variable servicing?

how do you know if a car is on fixed or variable servicing?

If it's brand new it will be on variable. If you have maximum you can check, or use VCDS.

I think trundlenut meant Maxidot, you can view when the next service is due from here, displayed in both miles and days.

Fixed = 10,000 miles / 365 days

Variable = up to 20,000 miles / 730 days (approx.)

All UK cars leave the factory set to variable but most dealers change them to fixed during the PDI to ensure they see you more often  ;)

  • 1 month later...

I'm a bit confused about the servicing of my car, (2.0 CR diesel 140)

On the sticker in the front of the service record book, the code indicates it was set to variable servicing as new, which I understood meant 2 years / 20,000 mile intervals.

I checked in the maxidot and this indicated an inspection due in 28 days time / 10,000 miles and a service due in 153 days time / 10,000 miles.

The car was first registered on 13th September 2013.

I bought the car in October 2014 with 2,200 miles on and the present mileage is 8,600.

I bought the car in anticipation of my work pattern changing and my mileage increasing dramatically. This has been delayed by several months but is still likely to happen, so I want to keep the car on the variable service schedule.

There are no stamps in the service record book so far.

The bits which I am confused by are:

1: Has the dealer set the car to fixed service schedule when I bought it?

2: What is the difference between an inspection and a service?

3: 153 days from now is over 2 years since the car was first registered. If no service has yet been done, as indicated by the lack of stamps in the book, this will be over 2 years.

4: Why is the mileage interval on the maxidot saying 10,000 if the interval is over 2 years?

I hope someone is able to clear some of this up, I am probably just not understanding the system!

Matt

True. My dealer had set it to fixed 10,000. Having it on variable with my driving its 17000 ish.

I don't think in spite of what is said, it monitors oil quality. As far as I know it monitors cold starts and how much soot is being produced that ends up in the oil, for example. Certainly an Audi I had a while ago with variable serving had an oil monitor but it only measured oil level and oil temperature in spite of someone trying to BS me that it measured the oil quality. I'm fairly sure the same sensors are still used.

Your car is set to variable. Variable is up to (approx) 20,000 miles / 2 years.

An 'inspection' is a major service, a 'service' is a minor service / oil and filter change. See here:

http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/service-and-maintenance/simply-fixed/default

There are two triggers for a service, time (days) and distance (mileage), whichever is reached first. 153 days is (approx) the time remaining until you reach the 2 year interval.

The reason the mileage is 10,000 miles is because it is counting down. You have already covered 9,000 miles, add this to the 10,000 miles remaining and this takes you to around the 20,000 mile max mileage allowed between service intervals. Your car has not yet had its first service.

Personally given your low mileage I'd be having the car serviced at least once a year (10,000 miles or 12 months - whichever is reached first). I prefer fresh oil at least once every winter. Remember the oil is the life blood of the engine and turbo. Variable servicing is more suited to high mileage / motorway usage and fleet drivers looking to minimise servicing costs.

Why oh why do they mess about?

15,000 for all filters and good oil should suffice and protect any modern diesel engine, i seem to recall engines could extend oil life with a better remote oil filter rather than the silly paper thing we get stuck with....

And does anybody knows the other service needs? Just buying a used mk2 superb 125kw / dsg, and the service book doesnt say top much.

F.e when the belt should be changed?

Thx for help

Thanks Silver1011,

I will get the full service done soon. After that my mileage is likely to increase with a 60 mile daily round trip commute and a weekly 250 mile round trip too, so should be back on track for the variable servicing.
