Yes.

It would be better to say it prevents it operating when appropriate. The air con system will only operate when you turn the temp lower than the system can reach using the outside air or when you use the screen defrost button.

The rest of the time its not operating and reducing fuel consumption.

That's incorrect.

Econ turns the AC compressor off - even if a lower temp is selected.  Fans etc still work so if a lower temp is selected it will pull air from the outside & wind up the fan in an attempt to reduce cabin temperatures.

I drive around in econ for 90% of the time.  It saves about 1.5L/100km.  If I'm tootling around the suburbs I open all the windows.  Windows up above 80kph.

I always thought that the only way to turn off the AC compressor was to stop the engine or remove the drive belt as there is no clutch on the compressor.

When "off" only something like 2% of the refrigerant actually passes through the compressor, it is still turning but not compressing anything. It's controlled by a valve.

So it IS constantly turning, correct?

Yes, there isn't a clutch like the system on the mkI, so it always turns.

When i press econ why does it start up the fans ? I'd like to be able to just turn off the air-con without the fans running

turn down the fan speed. The system still tries to maintain the selected temperature when Econ is on.

If i turn the fans off then the econ turns off do i have to increase the temp first maybe ?

If you turn the fans off then there is no heating or cooling, you've turned it off.

So turning the fans off will stop the aircon then also ?

Without econ pressed does the aircon still continue to work even if a warm temp is selected ? Or does it only cut in if you select a low cold setting ?

Yes. You can also mod the top part of the centre dial inner to work as an off button like on the Golf by breaking off a little tab. When the fan is turned alk the way down or the button is pressed itvshould say off on the temp displays. This is assuming it's a climatronic system.

Yes.

As above the compressor is always being turned as it is permanently attached with no clutch.

When ECON is turned on or the fans are turned off (with "Off" displayed on both displays) then the A/C isn't working. Just a nominal amount of coolant being pushed round with the valve closed.

Yes. The A/C runs all the time without ECON on no matter what the temperature is set to.

The only time it doesn't run with ECON off is when the ambient temperatures drops to 4c or lower.

Hi what centre dial is that please ?

Hi what centre dial is that please ?

Do you have climatronic or manual aircon?

As I recall system needs to keep some coolant flowing because it lubricates and conditions the seals as well as doing the actual refrigeration. So when it's on ECON, it's still on a bit.

IMHO it made sod all difference to the mpg so I just left it on all the time and set the AC at 21C.

Climatronic do you mean the fan speed switch the top part has no function on my car ?

Yes the top half of the centre of the fan dial. There is a switch behind the blank but a small tab prevents the blank from being pushed in. If you pull the blank out and cut the end bit of the tab off it then works as an off switch. The Golf has off marked on the switch and an led behind, the Octavia doesn't have the led though, so you could get hold of the Golf off switch but it won't light up.
